I admit – I took the day off yesterday – from everything and everyone. I went to Paso on Friday, a 6 hour round trip to do my shopping, and it wore me out.

I do have some depressing news about Alder Creek. Cal-Trans sent out a notice on Friday that the road would be closed there for 4-6 weeks. Bah, phewy. Cambria is my closest town. I have pre-paid for some work to be done out of there – so I guess I’ll be waiting on that. Word on the street is that three “spider” excavators are being brought in to work the top of the slide as Cal-Trans did on the big slide in 1983.

As difficult as this is on some of us, I cannot but imagine the toll it is taking on Pacific Valley School. Many of the teachers and staff live south of the slide. This past week, they have been on Easter break, so not too difficult, but next week? It will be a challenge to house all those who must be housed here during the closure.

Weather has also been depressing – wet and cold. Looks like one more round, and then a dry week ahead. NOAA discussion –
“ANOTHER LOW MOVING INTO THE PAC NW LATER TONIGHT AND MONDAY WILL INITIALLY DRAG A WARM FRONT THROUGH NORCAL FOLLOWED BY A COLD FRONT. AS A RESULT…ANOTHER ROUND OF LIGHT RAIN WILL BE POSSIBLE LATE TONIGHT AND MONDAY. MODEL GUIDANCE FOCUSES MOST OF THE RAINFALL OVER THE NORTH BAY…BUT SOME RAIN WILL BE POSSIBLE AS FAR SOUTH AS MONTEREY. RAINFALL AMOUNTS WILL ONCE AGAIN BE ON THE LIGHT SIDE. THE REST OF THE WORK WEEK APPEARS TO BE DRY AS WEAK RIDGING BUILDS OVER THE REGION.”

My mood needs sun.

  • I'm amazed at how often mother nature challenges CalTrans on Hwy 1 and the challenges that are extended to the good folk living in the region. Best wishes to all.

  • Hang in there Kate and everyone! This too SHALL pass. And, of course, it's an amazing opportunity to have Big Sur semi to yourselves...but of course you know that. Wish I was there to wait it out with you!! Soon enough...I'm working on that! Love to all....

  • Nice to hear your voice, ugh on the big round trip still plaguing you. And wow, damn the bad slide and long effect. Maybe they'll surprise us and do it faster. Sorry for all those still closed off, which ultimately includes us further north. The good news is that we ARE getting tourists making the long trek because they love Big Sur, and with very few exceptions are delighted to be here and have a glow of heroics to them.
Very full weekend at Hawks Perch, lots of cars for a change everywhere, and all the campsite/cabins booked. Sweet. The first customer I met in two months I stared at blankly, not knowing why she had walked into my gallery. Then, duh, oh! The muscle memory kicked in. Good luck to one and all and Happy Easter.

  • looking forward to a terrific 9 days in Big Sur.....heading up Thursday AM from San Diego.....what a wonderful community you have!

  • I did my run yesterday after a very long week at work. Today is my down day. And man do I feel whooped! Gonna be a long week. A long 6 weeks I suspect.
Love to you sweetie & Happy Easter.

  • Happy Easter Kate, I know the sun will help and I am still holding out for Hwy 1 to open to the South sooner than later. Time for our wonderful reporter to have some magic.

  • Kate,
Easter wishes and blessings to you.
And UGH, I can really empathize with everything you said about the Alder Creek slide. I had to endure, first-hand, those long, fatiguing drives over Nacimiento for ...how long was it???...mind-numbing. Now my fellow teachers to the south have to suffer it too. But we are resilient and persistent, so we will keep things going, despite the "rocks in our road". Maybe I'll be covering some classes to give the others some breaks from the endurance. Thanks again for your good thoughts.

  • Greetings from sun-baked England - never seen so many lily-white legs! Time to name names - who is responsible for the side-casting ban? Why isn't it repealed? Q city...
