Alder Creek, 5/28/11 – Almost There

They are now down to about 60 feet above the highway, and it is looking good! The dirt on the south side is being hauled off for a realignment project on Highway One near Arroyo de la Cruz, I think it is. Here are a few photos from yesterday:

The last update put up by Cal-Trans on Thursday gave a projected opening of mid-June. Based on these photos, that looks very likely – if not before, and if no unforeseen challenges.

  • Wow. They are making great progress. At least in these photos they have a flat area to work with. Thanks again for the photos and news.

  • Wow! Gotta hand it to the people working on this! Wow! That's all I can say.

  • Big Kudos going out to the Winsor Crew & Cal-Trans Crew! Yeah, Chuck, Dave, Jesus & Everyone working on this!!

  • Great news !! I hope it is going to be open before mid-june as you said, because we planed to drive through there on the 16th of june !!!!!Thanks a lot for these pictures ;)

  • Oh my! I am amazed that in just under three weeks anyone could fix this. Truly eye-opening for a midwest resident to wrap her brain around. I learn so much about your world through these photos you post, Kate.

  • I just spoke to one of the Winsor truck drivers who says the new realistic target date for opening Alder is July 1. He said that after 10 trucks on the north side hauled dirt for 10 hours today, the slide looked the same as it did before they started in the morning. The lower part of the slide that is now being trucked away is much thicker, deeper and wider than the upper part of the slide was. And hauling dirt with trucks is much slower than pushing dirt into the ocean, no matter how many trucks and how fast they can haul.

  • Hey, thanks for the update. I am due to be come over for a 'Road Trip' with my wife in August. We are going from San Francisco to Las Vegas via Los Angeles! So we are looking forward to enjoying the stunning view to be seen on our way and crossing our fingers that Highway One is fully open.

    Please keep the updates going.

    Thanks Damian

P.s. Are they any tips on what to see and do? We want to see the real Big Sur rather than being 'typical tourists' :) Thanks
