.DISCUSSION…AS OF 02:30 PM PST FRIDAY…

HIGH CLOUDS ARE STREAMING INTO THE AREA AHEAD OF A SHORTWAVE
CURRENTLY CENTERED OFF THE OREGON COAST. PRECIPITATION IS STILL
MOSTLY CONFINED TO FAR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA HOWEVER SNOW IS
CURRENTLY FALLING IN MENDOCINO COUNTY WHERE COLD AIR IS TRAPPED.
RAIN IS FORECAST TO BEGIN ACROSS THE NORTH BAY LATER THIS
AFTERNOON AND SPREAD ACROSS THE REST OF THE AREA OVERNIGHT.
RAINFALL ACCUMULATION WILL RANGE FROM A TENTH TO A QUARTER OF AN
INCH AROUND THE URBAN BAY AREA WITH AROUND A HALF INCH AT HIGHER
ELEVATIONS.

SNOW LEVELS WILL INITIALLY BE AROUND 2500 TO 3000 FEET ACROSS
MOST OF THE AREA AS THE PRECIPITATION BEGINS…DROPPING TO AS LOW
AS 2000 FEET AFTER THE FRONT PASSES. SNOW ACCUMULATION OF TWO TO
FOUR INCHES IS POSSIBLE ABOVE 2500 FEET. SNOW LEVELS ARE SLIGHTLY
LOWER OVER THE NORTH BAY HOWEVER ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED TO BE
LIGHT. MODELS ARE INDICATING SHOWERS WILL LINGER OVER MONTEREY AND
SAN BENITO COUNTIES INTO MID SUNDAY MORNING WHEN COLDER AIR
ARRIVES WHICH COULD INCREASE ACCUMULATIONS UP TO AROUND SIX
INCHES OF SNOW. TRAVEL IN AREAS WITH SNOW OR RAIN SNOW MIX COULD
BECOME DIFFICULT.

OVERNIGHT LOW TEMPERATURES TONIGHT WILL BE MUCH WARMER THAN THOSE
OF THE PAST FEW NIGHTS. AS THE SKIES CLEAR IN THE NORTH BAY BEFORE
SUNRISE SATURDAY MORNING HOWEVER TEMPERATURES COULD END UP
PLUMMETING. HAVE GONE WITH A MIDDLE SOLUTION OF SOME COOLING OVER
SONOMA AND NAPA BUT IT COULD END UP BEING EVEN COLDER IN ISOLATED
VALLEYS IF THE CLOUDS ARE FAST TO CLEAR AND WINDS REMAIN LIGHT.

VERY COLD AIR WILL RETURN POST FRONT LEADING TO AT LEAST TWO MORE
MORNINGS BELOW FREEZING IN MANY AREAS. FREEZE WARNING HAS BEEN
ISSUED FOR MOST OF THE AREA FOR SUNDAY MORNING. TEMPERATURES
SLOWLY REBOUND AROUND THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK AS A RIDGE BUILDS
ACROSS THE WEST. IT IS QUICK TO PROGRESS INLAND HOWEVER LEADING TO
A CHANCE OF RAIN LATE IN THE WEEK AS A LONG WAVE TROUGH MOVES

  1. I wonder if I am in the minority—I LOVE SNOW!! Californian transplanted to Washington….and to me, the white stuff is fun stuff!! Love the Falling Snow graphics, Kate!! Happy Holidays!

  2. A few light sprinkles at the moment in Pebble Beach but at our elevation, (about 1,000 ft) I don’t think we will see the white stuff.

  3. I filled up my inside wood box, the one on the deck is about 1/2 full, I got it up to 80 inside, we are all warm and cozy. Hoping for great pics in the am.

  4. Diane, I am a native Californian, and I also love the snow, especially the first one. So looking forward to this. If I had it all day, every day during the winter, like many other states, I would probably wouldn’t.

  5. Oh, we can only hope for a bit of the white stuff. No where we HAVE to be all weekend. Will stay cozy & warm. Kate, don’t know if you’ve heard from anyone else, but tonights River Inn fund raiser for the Big Sur Health Center was one of the best I’ve ever attended. Almost all staff & board members there. It was like a big family dinner. Babe VERY well received. Not having to “dress”, babies & children welcomed. Womb to tomb age grouping,… so healthy for all of us to be part of this “village”. & did I mention the food was yummy. Big thanks to River Inn!

  6. 😉 Rain started here, means perhaps snow to come? Glad you had fun. Our village is special!

  7. LOL , Kate had to share….your falling snow has made my MacAir fair game for my new kitten. She tries to not attack. She sits ever-so-still & quietly for as long as she can. Which is about 13 seconds. Begins to stalk….and expertly pounces onto the Lap Top Jungle. Kitten 2.0 🙂

BTW I remember growing up in Santa Cruz, & during the winter, we would drive up to the mountains, have a picnic lunch, load up my Dad’s pickup with Snow, then drive home as fast as we could~~because what, may I ask, is better than real snowball fights on the beach!

Remembering those priceless days, I am suddenly farther down on memory lane…because it was the same yellow Toyota that I used to learn to drive! with. Unofficial Drivers Ed, i.e. Baptism by Fire on Highway 17.

  8. Diana, I so enjoyed your comments. Similar for us in LA, we’d go up to Mt Baldy for the snow, come back in the ’64 Toyota land cruiser pick up. No beach in Pomona, though, but snowball fights in the orange groves, were fun nun the less.

  9. Hey Bette—Orange grove snowball fights sound awesome!! A lovely citrus scent filling the air….then BAM! a frozen ball smacks you in the face. Those were the days my friend, I’d thought they’d never end……but alas, they did and always will : (

  10. I am up here in Las Vegas, Nevada and it is extremely cold. Currently under hard freeze warning. We have heard on weather reports to expect light snow. I too am a native Califorian until relocating this March.

  11. Hit 30 degrees early this am. I’m sure lower on the ridges here in Palo.
