  1. was planning to head south… think we’ll wait. thanks!

  2. 2005 Blue VSTROM
    Rider – Keith– released soon
Passenger – Julie – released from hospital
    Hit large Deer
Thank you to EMS – CHP- Chopper pilots.

  3. Keith, thanks for the update and so very glad to hear you will both be okay. I’ve hit a deer in my Jeep and can’t even imagine how tough that would be on a motorcycle.

  4. Keith Phelan, a local resident, was driving the motorcycle with a female passenger. The passenger shattered her left elbow, and Keith has 12 cracked ribs, a ruptured spleen, and other internal injuries. Keith has been in and out of surgery and ICU, and is likely to be released from Natividad tomorrow afternoon.
He will be on the mend for quite awhile.

Keith has lived and worked on the coast as a camp host & property watchkeeper for a number of years.
He was most well known as the camp host at Kirk Creek 2013-2015 and Limekiln SP around 2000.
He currently is property watching near Ragged Point.

  5. To all our friends and neighbors,
Julie and I left for a mothers day ride up our beautiful coast line only to be greeted by a large buck , who thought it appropriate to cross our paths at the south entrance of Nephentes 1 :00pm in the afternoon ,
while we were traveling Northbound towards Big Sur Deli.
We struck the Deer dead center, right side, causing us to be slammed to the asphault on our left side. The deer didn’t make it , but we did.
EMS services saved my life on seen , had a spleen that burst, causing me to black out. Julie hit her left elbow so hard it fractured into pieces , while bleeding heavy. her hip and shoulder are banged up but ok.
We were fortunate enough to have two helicopters air lift us to Salinas Trauma center, were Julie underwent elbow surgery and I had open abdomen surgery were they found ruptured spleen which they removed.
I spent 18 days in hospital with collapsed left lung, 9 Fractured ribs, 12 cracked ribs and a few small scraps and bruzes . Julie had stitches to her left eyebrow , facial scraps and cuts. Julies Elbow has had two surgeries , last one done at Cottage hospital in Santa Barbara. fighting an infection, Julie is strong willed and assures me she’ll make it through this with flying colors.
Again to all our well wishers, Friends and Big Sur & Cayucos families, its been heartwarming all the wonderful cards and letters we’ve received.

We are both on the mend and getting stronger every day.
To those of you that were stuck in the traffic caused by this accident my sincerest appolages to you and yours.
Big Sur Kate, Thank You for this community blog, its so helpful to all.!

    God Bless ,

    Keith Phelan
    Julie Sanders

  6. Keith, thank you so much for the update. Glad you and Julie are doing better each day. Kudos to the EMS and helicopters pilots. They can be the difference between life and death.
