SLIDE REPAIR PROJECT ALONG SOUTHBOUND HIGHWAY 1 BETWEEN CARMEL VALLEY ROAD AND RIO ROAD IN CARMEL—ONE DAY ONLY—SATURDAY, MAY 21

MONTEREY COUNTY – One day of slide repair by our maintenance crews along a quarter-mile of southbound Highway 1 between Carmel Valley and Rio Roads in Carmel is scheduled on Saturday morning, May 21, Caltrans officials announced today.

Roadwork will take place from 6 am to 11 am and consist of traffic being detoured around the closure for shoulder cleaning from slide activity. Motorists can expect delays of 15-20 minutes. Electronic message signs will be posted alerting motorists of the work.

The purpose of this roadwork is to improve traveler safety by making highway repairs. It is being done by the Caltrans Monterey Maintenance Crew.

  • From the Amgen website:
"Founded in 2005 by Amgen, Breakaway from Cancer® is a national initiative to increase awareness of important resources available to people affected by cancer – from prevention to survivorship. Breakaway from Cancer is a collaboration between Amgen and four nonprofit organizations: Prevent Cancer Foundation, Cancer Support Community, Patient Advocate Foundation and National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. These organizations offer a broad range of support services complementing those provided by a patient’s team of healthcare professionals."

The question to ask is how much of the $$ raised by the race goes to administration of the race and how much to actually funding research, prevention, patient services. Cities and counties that host the race get nothing directly from Amgen, just "free" (not really!) publicity.
