  1. Definitely not liking that finger extension behind Post Summit. Fingers crossed that winds stay from the west and it doesn’t make a run for us.

  2. Thanks, Adam! I’ve added the Google Maps link and made a note at the top. Note, you must be signed in to a Google account to view this link.

  3. I really appreciate these detailed updates! Thank you so much. I have family travelling up to Big Sur this weekend (planned months in advance). Are areas in south Big Sur, like McWay Falls, closed as well? Trying to get some insight so I can plan their itinerary. Thanks everyone.

  4. Hillary, all state parks from McWay Falls to Andrew Molera and the Lighthouse are CLOSED at this time. Air quality is severely impacted.

  5. possibly suggest the MOnterey Bay acquarium and other local Carmel/Monterey places or even Santa Cruz.

  6. Travellers from the south through Big Sur can stop at the Willow Creek Vista pullout, 1 mile north of Gorda & Treebones Resorts and drive down to the beach, or visit Sanddollar Beach a few more miles north, across from Pacific Valley School. Businesses are also still open along the highway. Big Sur River Inn has grassy green lawns and a swimming pool along side the Big Sur River. However, Kate is right about the air quality. The smoke has even inundated Cambria which is an hour south of Willow Creek and Sanddollar.

  7. Thank you so much for your posts. Big Sur is my second home and this is heartbreaking. Checking your site daily. Helps with focus of prayers/spiritual protection requests. Just wanted to say your wordpress is appreciated. Thank you.

  8. US Forest Service is using Avenza PDF Maps to pinpoint their exact GPS location onto the Ops Map. You can also use this App on your smartphone to pinpoint your exact GPS location in relation to the Fire Line or Dozer Line. Read more about it here: http://www.avenza.com/news/2015/10/27/united-states-forest-service-deploys-avenza-pdf-maps-app-fire-fighting

“Avenza’s PDF Maps app operates without the risk of lost reception due to cell tower proximity and does not rely on an internet connection to use map data. It uses GPS to obtain and display an accurate position on the ground regardless of network connectivity.”

Install PDF Maps from the Apple Store or Google Play. Location Services must be turned “on”.

The most current Ops North map can be found here (copy/paste this when loading a map “from the web” – must be changed out daily with the most current map): http://ftp.nifc.gov/incident_specific_data/calif_s/CALFIRE/2016_Incidents/CA-BEU-003422_Soberanes/GIS/Products/20160804/Ops_North_E_port_20160804_Soberanes_CABEU003422_opt.pdf

  9. Thank you Kate, for writing an excellent compelling blog with accurate information. Your photography has been amazing. It is so sad to see such a beautiful area to be so ravaged. Thank you.
