As of 1 pm, Cal Trans (CT) has no ETA on when they will be able to open the highway. I expect an update around dusk.

Here is a photo of the Big Sur River near the Lodge by Howard Jones:

Okay, now this is scary. This map shows a maximum of 45″ in the next 10 days. (See top of chart in white on right.) Yeah, in the brightest purple spots, which seems to include Big Sur.

10 am – Well, here you g0. The South Coast got hammered and it is still raining, although not as hard. FYI, I am between Chalk Peak and Three Peaks:

  1. Sheesh! At 1am I had 3.3″, at 6:30am I had something like 6″ but I am not exactly sure because the rain gage overflowed.

  2. Yeah, my automated gauge is in a “rain shadow” as it is on the shorter south-facing roof, and the north-facing taller section of the roof is where the rain always comes from. I’m probably much higher. Keep saying I’m going to move it, but on the higher side is much harder and more dangerous to get to.

  3. Hi Kate Am a follower since the fire. Be safe! Have a great 2017! Best, Brenda Murdock Carmel Sent from my iPad.

  4. 7.03″ at Big Sur Station between 4 p.m. yesterday and 9 a.m. this morning

  5. 7am, rain gauge read 6.2″ Esalen Garden. Hot Springs creek is raging, with the thundering sound of boulders being rolled downstream!

  6. The most water running through our campground, had to have been a flash flood, it is raging here. Kind of fun as long as we can get our guests out. Logs coming down and the river smells of smoke. Stay safe everyone, stay home. Hugs.

  7. Stay home is a good point. I just post another map that shows a maximum of 45 inches expected in the next 10 days and a lot of that headed for Big Sur. BE SMART AND BE SAFE EVERYONE!

  8. If I were Pam, I would get WAY uphill of the river. If a log jam forms upstream and then breaks hours later after blocking a large volume of water, the results could be catastrophic.

  9. I think I am uphill enough Suzi where I am even though we had a flash flood through our lower campground early this morning but I believe I am safe. Let’s have the rain predictions lessen by quite a bit. 10″ in the next 10 days is enough for me. Thanks Kate. I got your post and your love. I am much more worried about the Grange and that area. Love you ladies.

  10. So sorry for the blue Honda owner submerged in mud, I hope you have good insurance.
