Highway One remains closed 1/10/17

CALTRANS

Good morning everyone,

So the pictures below are from Fernwood (PM 47) and show what we were dealing with yesterday, basically we got enough room open for emergency vehicles to get through. All the trees in the slide damned everything up so we left it and will start removing it today. It was still pretty active dropping a 100 plus yards of material while we were there, so it might be somewhat of a slow process.

As for the update, Hwy. 1 still remains closed from Ragged Pt. (SLO PM 72.87) to Fernwood (MON PM 47.03). Emergency vehicles and locals can get from Treebones (PM 11.11) to Ragged Point…SOUTHBOUND ONLY. Locals in between Fuller’s (PM 42) and Fernwood (PM 47.03) can move between those five miles only. Hotline recording will remain the same. Another update will be provided around noontime today.

  1. Yes, perfect – emergency vehicles can get through and the kids to and from school. But Sacred Highway One deserves a respite from the hordes and a temporary return to the quiet days that once were the norm…

  2. A friend just came up Clear Ridge Road and said the River Inn entrance is passable but very muddy. He said there are lots of cars on CR Road…

  3. Pacific Valley School students are able to make it from Lucia and Gorda Mtn. So, Paul’s slide is passable and should be approached with care…as all of Hwy 1 should be handled during these rains especially.

  4. Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors declares area is in a state of emergency.

  5. LIMITED TIME AND ACCESS FROM VENTANA TO FERNWOOD–THIS IS ONLY FOR LOCALS, EMERGENCY SERVICES AND VISITORS WISHING TO LEAVE THE BIG SUR AREA!!!

    AT 1 PM:
HWY. 1 WILL OPEN ONE LANE TO ALLOW NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC TO EXIT FROM FULLERS PAST FERNWOOD.

    AT 1:30 PM:
HWY. 1 WILL OPEN ONE LANE TO ALLOW SOUTHBOUND TRAFFIC TO ENTER FROM FERNWOOD TO FULLERS…LOCALS AND EMERGENCY SERVICES.

    AT 2:00 PM:
HWY. 1 WILL CLOSE AGAIN INDEFINATELY TO WORK ON CLEARING THE ACTIVE SLIDES…THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND COOPERATION.

FYI–The pictures above are from Paul’s Slide (PM 21.6) and Mud Creek (PM 8.8) and show what we were dealing with THIS MORNING, hence why the road needs to remain closed at the southern portion of Hwy. 1 to Ragged Point.

As for the update HWY. 1 STILL REMAINS CLOSED from Ragged Pt. (SLO PM 72.87) to Fernwood (MON PM 47.03). Emergency vehicles and locals can get from south of Mud Creek (south of PM 8.8) to Ragged Point.SOUTHBOUND ONLY. Locals in between Fuller’s (PM 42) and Fernwood (PM 47.03) can move between those five miles only. Hotline recording will be updated to show the ONE HOUR TRAFFIC ACCESS N/B AND S/B AT FERWOOD BETWEEN 1PM AND 2PM DETAILED ABOVE. Another update will be provided around 4 PM today.
