I want everyone of you who are complaining about the closures, putting pressure on Cal Trans to keep the road open for locals and particularly for the tourists during the AT& T, or otherwise whining, to study these two photos taken less than a day apart from the same spot – compare the guardrail on the west side of the highway if you don’t believe me. This job is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. Top is Monday, Feb. 6, 2107. Bottom is before dawn, Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017. NO ONE’s life is worth keeping this road open when Mother Nature is throwing all these storms at us. Also, think about if this had given way while you were headed off to work on the north coast at the moment you went underneath. It can happen. Think, people!

  • My sentiments exactly also; in fact yesterday or so when you posted the first picture above showing the workers putting in that temporary net/fence, I thought there's no way I would ever be doing that in the first place with the risk of something coming down on me (because that slide shown in the nightime pic above could well have come down while the crew was working there). My hats off and many thanks to the Caltrans crews who go out and work on this stuff every day.

  • Thank you! We just had a flash flood warning in SF and, as promised, it was a doozy. Y'all be safe down there in beloved Big Sur.

  • yes, some of us remember the rig of cal trans worker who went into the sea in the 80's...and I had one half of the road fall into the sea coming back late at night from a meeting in Santa Cruz...scariest moment of my life!

  • There's people wondering if they can drive to work today from Clear Ridge to Esalen. Where is this exactly?
