There continue to be more slides from Deetjen’s (PM 43.17) to Mud Creek (PM 8.8) that occurred yesterday, requiring the northern closure to move to Nepenthe (PM 43.8) with a lane closed at Fernwood (PM 47.03)

The inclement weather continues to give us more slides at multiple locations, the newest and largest came overnight at Cow Cliffs (PM 28.35), but additional small slides between Cow Cliffs and now Deetjen’s (PM 43.17) require closure to extend to Nepenthe (PM 44) until further notice.

State Route 1 is now closed between Ragged Pt. (SLO 72.87) and Nepenthe (Mon 44). Another storm is expected tomorrow afternoon, Thursday, Feb. 9.
I Motorists may travel north on State Route 1 from Cambria to Ragged Point (SLO PM 72.87) or south from Carmel to Nepenthe’s (PM 44)
The roadway is not passable between Ragged Pt (SLO 72.87)and Nepenthe (PM 44)

Some of these reports are poorly written with regards to what is a hard closure and what may be passable to locals. It is not clear whether it is passable to locals from the northern closure. It would be great if they clarified it.
I agree, Jon, and I used to get frustrated, too, but yesterday, I found out Susana is responsible for ALL the notices for Monterey County, Santa Cruz County, AND San Benito Counties, and as we all know, it has been a nightmare in Santa Cruz to keep up with what is happening AS WELL as what has been going on here on Highway One. It changes moment to moment. At some point, it is up to us – especially us long-time residents – to make our own decisions. One 50 year residency local who has been both north and south earlier this week, said it was a nightmare best avoided. He had an important doctors appointment north, before Cow Cliffs gave way, and a vet appointment south, so decided to take a chance, but wouldn’t do it again.

If they would allow the seasoned locals to make the decision to make it home it would be nice. Instead they stick some CHP officers who have no idea who anyone is or where anything is, with very sour attitudes and no kind of sympathy while they arrogantly keep a mother stuck away from home and her 2 year old, when it is clearly passable for her to get home.
We got stopped by the CHP last night about 7:00 at Deetjen’s. It was a hard closure. Since we couldn’t go home we went to Fernwood where we had dinner and spent the night. We enjoyed ourselves along with several other locals with no place to go. It was a joyful diversion in an otherwise disrupted day.
CHP let us through the Nepenthe closure to return to Partington at about 9:30 this morning. There were several spots with mud and small rocks in the south bound lane but it was relatively easy to traverse. Cal Trans was gradually working its way south with hopes of clearance sometime this afternoon. We’ll see.
A agree, and maybe locals need to talk to the CHP bosses re this issue.

We were at 53″ for the season here in Pear Valley. Haven’t seen that much for a while.

[John Alvord here] We lived on Pfeiffer Ridge from 1999 to 2013 and had a pretty great rainfall meter. Twice in those years I measured 65 inches or more for a season. I especially remember one Saturday afternoon when 10 inches poured down.
The records are, you know, burned up but I remember.
