***SAME INFORMATION, NEW INFORMATION FOR LOCALS***
State Route 1 is now closed between Ragged Pt. (SLO 72.87) and just south of Nepenthe (Mon 44). Another storm is expected today Thursday, Feb. 9.
I Motorists may travel north on State Route 1 from Cambria to Ragged Point (SLO PM 72.87) or south from Carmel to Nepenthe’s (PM 44).

The roadway is not passable between Ragged Pt (SLO 72.87)and Nepenthe (PM 44)

*LOCALS MAY NOT TRAVEL NORTH BETWEEN RAGGED POINT AND LUCIA RANCH (PM 31.10)…MUD CREED IS NOT PASSABLE AND CONSTRUCTION CREWS ARE NOT PRESENT TODAY…BUT LOCALS MAY TRAVEL SOUTH FROM NEPENTHE TO [SANTA] LUCIA RANCH [about 2 miles south of Esalen] (31.1) AS THERE ARE SEVERAL LOCATIONS WITH ONLY ONE LANE OPEN DUE TO ROCK/MUDSLIDES.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Our Maintenance, Geotech and Construction crews continue to work collaboratively and diligently, as much as safely possible in response to these rock/mudslides

  • "...that is when the biggest slides happen"....suddenly, unexpectedly, and dangerously...and when you think all is well. I loved the analogy I saw somewhere that Sur "is a snake shedding its skin"....

    • "The Santa Lucias are like a snake shedding its skin..." A comment on FB by someone that Kathe Tanner will be using in her article for The Cambrian and The SLO Trib. (Not Big Sur, but the mountains.)

    • Jon, There is a left over Chimney up on the top of that ridge, and yes, it is about 1/2 mile north of Kirk Creek or there about, so Susana, who is not as familiar with this coast, would be relying on info sent her. Thanks for all you are doing with the interactive map.

  • Just to clarify, Lucia ranch ought to be santa Lucia ranch, approximately 2 miles south of esalen, not to be confused with Lucia and the Harlan ranch, which is not accessible from any direction at this time. FYI.

    • Yes, I believe you are correct. As I understand it, Lucia is having its own set of issues and would not be a particularly good place to be "hanging out" unnecessarily, right now, as I saw a photo of "Lucia Point" crumbling into the sea ...

  • Yes Kate, in referring to your and Bree's comments, with your connections to CalTrans is it possible for you to point out to their hard-working personnel who are so dedicatedly keeping us updated how important to differentiate between Lucia (PM 23) and Santa Lucia Ranch (PM 31.1). When reading, names pop out more prominently than numbers and even those of us who know better can be fooled, egged on by wishful thinking. I was ready to jump in my car and go vist my daughter until I read more closely!

    • Connie, I did mention it, and as you have already no doubt seen, she issued a correction. Susana has had her hands full since she also covers Santa Cruz and the fatality yesterday. As I get more testy due to cabin fever and rain woes (and all that entailes, I am reminding myself to be kind, slow down, and breathe.

  • What fatality? There was one 2 days ago at the tree across from Captain Cooper School driveway. Has there been another one since that one?

    • Fatality up on Highway 17, a contract Highway worker. Two were run over by a dump truck. One hospitalized and one fatality

  • Suzi, it may have been in Santa Cruz on Rte. 17. While listening to KOTR today there was mention of 17 closed due to slides and an investigation into yesterday's accident. Not sure, but could be.
