New Slide at Hurricane?

1:34 PM 3 [5] LOCALS ALLOWED THRU F/PALO COLORADO TO PFEIFFER BRIDGE / UNESCORTED DURING DAYLIGHT HRS / MUST USE CAUTION / AND YIELD TO ANY CALTRANS EQUIP AND PERSONNEL

This is actually before  (or north) of the “u” turn over the Little Sur River, and after Hurricane Point, but closer to the Little Sur. this is posted on CHP website:
10:45 AM 2 [4] CT DIST 5 HAS BEEN NOTIFIED OF NEW SLIDE NEAR MPM 57.59 – RDWY IS STARTING TO GIVE WAY W/CRACKS 1-2FT DEEP AND 1-1/5FT WIDE
10:43 AM 1 [2] SR1 IN BIG SUR IS CLOSED F/ PALO COLORADO (MPM 61) DOWN TO THE MTY/SLO COUNTY LINE

Not good. Not good at all. And the OCR is a friggin’ river, so that’s a no-go. I posted these 3 days ago. These are the photos of where the OCR was…

Here are a few photos taken by the CHP last night of the problem

9:20 am -From a friend:

“Good morning! A Big Sur neighbor just called me from town to say that he was turned back at Palo Colorado in the last 30 minutes because there is a slide blocking both lanes near Hurricane Point. I called My 911 communications desk who said they didn’t know of any current slides but had a report of a slide near MM57 very early this morning. there is no word on CHP traffic site about this new closure. Thought I’d pass it on.”

I have not been able to confirm this through CHP or other, at this point. Will update when I know.

  1. Yes I just got the call from ripplewood confirming the closure. Slide covering both lanes and knocked off a guard rail. No word on how long, but sounded like a big one

  2. I reported this slide this morning around 1:00am. After going through the Palo Colorado checkpoint heading south I came around a bend about two miles south of Bixby to find that the entire northbound lane and nearly all of the southbound lane was blocked by new slide. Mostly mud, rather than rock. This looked like the other smaller slides that have occurred between carmel and the big sur valley. I imagine that it could be cleared relatively quickly, but may remain active. Fingers crossed for a full road opening soon.

  3. From Lisa K: “Just talked to a contractor who attempted to get to Bi Sur Valley and was turned away due to a slid on the north lanes of the U at little Sur. Also mentioned he drive over deep cracks in the road that ran down the middle of the road in the same area. Wonder if anyone can verify this.” This might be the same one, general area, anyway…

  4. From south of Little Sur, you can see a big slip below the cribbing on the hwy just north of Little Sur. That was there since at least yesterday afternoon when I went into town.

  5. Re: the slide that Lisa K saw — that sounds different than what I saw last night. Also, for the slide on Hurricane Pt it looked possibly passable in a truck if someone is really needing to head north.

  7. Drove through this slide going north about 7:30am It was covering over three quarters of the highway. Was able to get thru in a Subaru Outback

  9. The cracks just north of little Sur U were definitely not the only cracks in the concrete I saw when I went to town on Thursday, I hope that caltrans is looking a bit further north for the same kind of erosion and stress fractures.

  10. Huh. I did not notice those cracks when I was at the slide early this morning. With the major slide at Hurricane Pt years ago did it start similarly, with cracks in the road? Or was the slide more sudden? Also, I’d be curious to know if OCR is damaged and undrivable or just water logged? Not that I am planning to try that route any time soon . . .

  11. Hurricane point has always been an iffy area, similar to Devis slide, near Moss Beach. Cribbing at Little Sur has been going for 10 years, hassle for locals, there will be lotsa road work!

  12. A bit of good news, Friday our propane Company, Delta Liquid Energy of Paso Robles got trucks through from south and delivered much needed propane to customers almost empty Partington and Torre. Thankyou and kudos!

  13. a friend got through at that point around 6pm 2/25…
CHP , a bulldozer and lots of mud present but was let through

  14. CHP officers at Palo Colorado told me emphatically at noon that hwy 1 south of PC is open 24hrs for locals not just daylight hours, specifically and intentionally contradicting what is posted on the CHP traffic web site. But that openness depends on fair weather and no new road slides or other adverse physical road conditions.

  15. Good to know that things have returned to the pre-Friday night slide policy. Thanks, Jeff.

  16. I saw an MST “$3.50 Big Sur” bus coming south near Pt Sur lighthouse about noon today. has anyone heard about MST buses running? Do they check ID’s before they board?
