CALTRANS ANNOUNCES NEXT CONVOY TO PFEIFFER CANYON BRIDGE
MONTEREY COUNTY – Caltrans will continue the process of delivering construction equipment and materials to the site of the demolished Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge on State Route 1 via Nacimiento-Fergusson Road from US Highway 101 on Thursday, May 18.
These convoys will be escorted by the California Highway Patrol and will include full closures of Nacimiento-Fergusson Road beginning at 8 am. Motorists wishing to travel westbound should do so before the convoy begins. Motorists wishing to travel eastbound towards US Highway 101 will be held at State Route 1 until the convoy passes.
This convoy will include two concrete boom pumps, two mobile mixers and a Vactor truck. This equipment will be used to construct concrete abutments for the new bridge.
The steel girders for the new bridge are currently being fabricated at a plant in Vallejo, CA. The girders will then be moved to a plant near Stockton for painting before they are shipped to the Pfeiffer Canyon site. This $24 million project is expected to be open to the public in mid to late September.
Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway work zones.

Expensive bridge, but I actually thought it would be more. Considering the geology and the configuration of the site, I’m kind of impressed.
After listening to Delta Liquid driver describe how challenging it is for him to drive propane truck over Naci-Ferg, I wonder how all the convoy drivers will fare. The most challenging part safety wise will probably be the downhill curves that bend to the right.
Slow is the only way to take that road now. Way too much traffic by people who don’t know how to drive it. Coming through last Friday with the “cycling event” going on was nutso. Bicycles coming out of the curves on the downhill side, in the middle of the uphill side lane. At least a 1/2 dozen near misses and we were crawling!

We had fun with the bicycle event on Saturday going to Paso during it. Just shook our heads on that one and wondered how 911 would be called in a place that doesn’t have cell reception. Ignorance is bliss until something happens. I didn’t hear re: any accidents so was glad to hear they dodged a bullet on that event!
We were wondering the same thing on Friday. No 911 on Nasty, which really was, that day.

Satellite phones are the only useful way to communicate when there’s no cell service. Too bad that satellite phones are not as economical as cell phones. Might be worth requesting installation of satellite phone call boxes at various places on Nasty and on Hwy 1, but who would pay for it?
