Palo Colorado & 1 fatal accident

10/19/17 UPDATE; Per MCSO – SUSPECTS BROKE INTO MULTIPLE VEHICLES ALONG HIGHWAY 1 AND LATER LED DEPUTIES ON A HIGH SPEED CHASE AND THE SUSPECT VEHICLE CRASHED INTO ONCOMING MOTORISTS CAUSING INJURY. ONE OF THE OCCUPANTS OF THE SUSPECT VEHICLE DIED AS A RESULT OF THE COLLISION. (Fatality was a 16 year old female. There were 3 other males in the car, and they will most likely be charged with murder in her death, under the felony-murder rule.)

I came to town north to celebrate a few Oct. birthdays with girlfriends, and so was off line most of today. I am catching up on the incident at Palo & 1. Word has it (but not confirmed) that the suspect being pursued may be the fatality. One, maybe more, locals airlifted – one with broken legs. Details are sketchy. One vehicle on fire, but no serious spread. I will clarify in the am as much as I can.

  1. BIG SUR, Calif. —

Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies were involved in a high speed chase near Bixby Bridge around 5:30 p.m. with a vehicle, believed to be involved in at least 7 burglaries.

The suspect’s vehicle crashed into two other vehicles at Palo Colorado Road. A Chevrolet pickup completely burned and an Acura was torn in half.

One person was killed and three others were injured.

  2. Hi Kate, My husband and I had a late lunch at Cafe Keeva yesterday. When we returned to our car, parked on the level between the highway level parking and the Phoenix parking areas, several people were waiting for the sheriff to show up. A car near ours had its rear window smashed along with two other vehicles on the lower level. Those may be some of the burglaries referred to.

  3. We were at a School Board Meeting at Captain Cooper (we move them from different sites in the District) and were alerted by our late Bus from CHS to Big Sur that the was stranded on the North side of Palo Colorado road. Long wait to get the bus (and passengers) back down the coast. The Board and Administration ended up at Fernwood…the only place open for food. As usual…very good, friendly and the best place to hang-out and wait. I passed the carnage from the wreck at around 10:50 p.m. and the damage to the truck and one of the vehicles was unreal. It does bring into question the value of a high-speed pursuit on a road like the Coast highway. 459pc is burglary, a felony…but the risk and result, in the end to the innocent victims / passengers / Sheriffs… remains a serious concern. On the way down yesterday afternoon, a tourist decided to make a u-turn about 1/4 mile north of Rocky Point. It was a casual 3 point turn. Forward, back, forward again, back a little…and then North. Meanwhile…about 10 cars going both North and South were stopped in a row…watching this idiot. navigate the Coast highway. Just another train-wreck waiting to happen.
