Between the Rio Rd. Climbing lane construction, and the noticed work at Monastery Beach, traffic NB – going in to Carmel – is backed up to Yankee Point this morning, and it is taking 20 minutes to travel 1 mile, per Rob Wilks who sent this photo just now (11:15 am)
Just a reminder of what I posted two days ago:
Highway 1 – Carmel: June 11 – June 14
Caltrans will perform highway pavement maintenance on State Route 1 beginning Monday, June 11 – Thursday, June 14. Motorists can expect one-way reversing traffic control from 8 am until 4 pm in the following locations:
- Southbound Hwy. 1 at Carmelite Monastery and Monastery Beach, south of Carmel on Monday, June 11 and Tuesday, June 12.
- Southbound Hwy. 1 at Otter Cove and Arroyo Del Mar, south of Carmel Highlands on Wednesday, June 13.
- Southbound Hwy. 1 at Sobranes and Garrapata State Park, south of Carmel Highlands on Thursday, June 14.
Looks like the only good time to travel to town would be between midnight and 6 AM. What a mess!
Great plan Monterey county and Cal Trans! 😠
Sounds like what I see in LA every day!
It’s also 1 lane from Rio south to Carmel River bridge causing massive snarls on the grade and on Rio both directions. Not to mention they intermittently use the flaggers to let trucks cross. WtF!!!
And there you have it. It is too late. We have become LA
I recall the announcement about this work indicating “motorists should expect delays of up to 10 minutes”. Not that I every believed it, but why do they bother to issue such BS statements? Do they REALLY not know better?
just home from doc appt at Ryan ranch
took 2.5 hrs from yankee pt to get there(starting at 11) and an hour and 1:30 on return getting home at 4:30. All for a 30 min doc appt! On way home the caltrans road work was gone and rio had tapered off but traffic snarls didn’t seem to be getting better! Hwy 1 north to Rio Rd backed up south well beyond Mal PAso. On google maps looks to be to about Garrapata
