Car Week Public Meeting with Mary Adams on 7/11/18

How come car “week” is 9 days long? Extra days for set up and clean up? Inquiring minds want to know!

Dear Friends,
The upcoming Car Week (August 18 -26) will bring many visitors and activities to Monterey County. As locals, we balance the positive impacts and excitement with the intermittent frustrations caused by a major international event coming to town.
With the majority of activity set to occur in the Fifth District, I thought it appropriate to host a focused community meeting to help you prepare. In addition to outlining the economic impact to our county, our Car Week Community Meeting will:
  • Overview the comprehensive calendar of planned events;
  • Highlight events permitted by the County of Monterey;
  • Demo Monterey County Connect – your tool for reporting issues and requesting services; and
  • Enable you to ask questions and share your concerns.
Please join me on July 11, 2018 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. for an informative presentation and lively discussion. We will convene in the Laguan Seca Pavilion, located at 1021 Monterey-Salinas Highway. Representatives from the various organizations involved in readying our community for Car Week will be in attendance.
Best,
Mary.

  • Kate, Project hysterias & traffic portals are going to be intense at this townhall..

  • many many ( expensive ) cars ( and their wealthy drivers and passengers ), maybe more than ever, will be parading down highway 1, as always, and where pray tell will the necessary toilet facilities be located to accommodate the increase ?

    porta-potties even?

    can't take their money without the other aspects.....

    heck, we are not even dealing with the present tourism load.

    who gains ? who does not gain ? who pays ?

    the BS Marathon covers their impact, how about Car Week ?

    • Good point, Richard. If the Marathon can cover their impacts, why can’t Car Week? It brings in enough money.

  • I have heard the CarWeek is the largest single financial input that happens to the area, way way WAY beyond what the Marathon brings. ( hah ! running shoes vs Ferraris ? ) beyond golf tournaments, beyond Jazz Fest.

    soooo....? step up, beeyatches. pay your way. try a bit of win-share if not win-win. MoCo gets how much increase in various tax receipts? TOT, sales...

    I know, preaching to the choir here, but still.

  • Any event that closes local schools due to traffic needs to be scaled back.
    Carmel Unified School District now cancels school on the Friday of Car Week because it had become such a problem getting kids home after school.
    Can we have a “Locals Week” where there is not an event on the Monterey Peninsula or County?

  • I find it interesting that this meeting is being held at 9:30 am on a Wednesday, when a good portion of the people who are affected by Car Week traffic will be at work.
