Ten years ago today, I got pissed off at the Sheriff of the time during the Basin Fire when he threatened to arrest anyone who came onto Highway One to go help their neighbors. So, I called the newspapers in LA and SF and started this blog. I had never blogged before. Ten years, and just shy of 4,000 posts. Thank you all for being a part of this journey and helping me grow by following and commenting and calling me out, when necessary. Today, I am going to celebrate by being silent, unless, of course, all hell breaks loose.
Happy Anniversary Kate.
A well deserved day of silence. Enjoy
And thank-you for being my connection to Big Sur, if in spirit only.
But after all, isn’t that what she’s all about?
Thanks and see you tomorrow, cuz Hell is on lock-down today. 🙂
Thank you for being a strong voice for community and for having such an interesting blog! Enjoy your anniversary! We appreciate all you do!
Thank you Kate … your service is priceless!
I just read this this morning …
Transform Anger into Clarity
“Anger is traditionally thought to be close to wisdom. When not projected outward onto others or inward toward the self, it gives us the necessary energy and clarity to understand what needs to be done.”
—Thanissara, “Don’t Worry, Be Angry”
I like that quote. My anger is usually channeled to something positive, but this blog, and how it began is one of my bigger examples. My work in indigent criminal defense is another.

So glad for this blog…keeps us all informed, thank you!
Dear Counselor Kate: I will soon be celebrating the ten-year anniversary of your beloved post which serves as an unofficial beacon of light, intelligence, humor, pissed-offness and judicial emeritus for the Big Sur Nation and this outback arm of the Milky Way. Alas, it appears you will not be able to personally attend this celebration so please be so kind to inform me which ten cocktails and/or a 75 cl bottle of Veuve Cliquot I should drink on your behalf.
Ah, make it the bottle of Veuve Cliquot, if you will. I love that bubbly.

Thank You Kate. I have been following for a few years now, thru multiple fires and other “happenings” on the coast. You are such a welcome source of inspiration and information.
Enjoy the silence, and enjoy your decade as a Coastal Beacon!
Thank you for your service…ALL OF IT. You personify RIGHT LIVELIHOOD. Bless you, Kate.
Happy 10th Anniversary. Big Sur Kate is one of the most vital public services on the Central Coast. Thank you, Kate!
Can’t remember now when I joined you, but it’s been a wild and wonderful ride. Thank you for all you do!
Thank you, when the chips are down your efforts make a better community for all of us!
Kate, I found your blog when my fiancé was working the Soberanes Fire. He is a CalFire engineer in the Monterey unit. Your detailed coverage, fire maps, updates, etc, helped me to say “close” to him while he was out of service for more than a month. We live in Morro Bay and love reading about our much loved neighboring community of Big Sur. Thanks for all you do and your amazing coverage of major incidents in our area.
Congratulations.
You are amazing. We started tuning in with the Sobranes fire in which you provided such excellent daily information.
And so we just keep enjoying the blog on this special coastal community.

Thank you, Kate! Our community owes you a great debt for all of the work that you do.
Thank you thousands of times over. You are my most trusted source.
And thank you all the way from the Rocky Mountains for all that you have done for all of us in the community for so many years. I look back on all the years I have been teaching at Pacific Valley School, and your information was a life saving beacon in those tough times of fire and rain. You spread to all of us in isolated spots the valuable word on which we made critical plans and decisions. You have truly been a lifesaver!
Aloha
thank you Kate, you are awesome!!!
A lifesaver, that’s good, I like that.
You are appreciated, bsk.
By so many. Way to go!
Happy Anniversary from Wilmington, DE. Found you during Soberanes and love being able to stay in touch. Just got home from a week in Gilroy with my brother, who usually treats me to a ride at least to Nepenthe and back. Not this year, though, thanks to your reports about traffic from Highlands to Bixby. I’ll have to rely on photos and news from you for the time being. Maybe next year (when we can go all the way to Mud Creek, Mother Nature permitting). Thank you!
Kate, you are amazing and your blog is a gift to all to who love to help their neighbors. Makes me feel like i am a part of Big Sur because it has a special place in my heart while I live in Southern Cal.
I tune in once a week to catch up on the news and beautiful photos and comments.
All the best to you!
