  • Hi Kate, feel its warranted to highlight that after the next Thursday (1/17) storm things are appearing on global sattelites and models that the rain train is going to give us a break. Some other big changes are the interruption-from cold upwelling - of the warm oceanic kelvin wave that surfaced in the far east equatorial Pacific. This has pinched off the warming of the far eastern region and now we are in the stages of a weak Modoki El Nino. This pattern is much more conducive for strong ridging or high pressure off the west coast of North America as the jet stream becomes more meridional with higher amplified Planetary/Rossby waves. Moreover, the Madden Julian Oscillation signal-which almost always propagates eastward this time of year-is not and has weakened to favor no exact geographic region furtherly supporting a shift to a drier end of January. So when will rains return after this weeks wet pattern? Im not gonna cry wolf again and hype any Ark storms but what Climate Centers are watching for now is the MJO to re-emerge in the Indian Ocean and a shift to a more negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation. Based on how this Fall and Winters pattern has progressed it would be around early/mid February when our next impactful run of Wintry weather could be upon us. Nevertheless its very nice to see wetting beneficial rains and not extreme events that cause major issues!

  • What a letdown, #CaWx never dependable for normal weather behavior anymore. Building the snow pack again is going to be another work in progress!
