CONSTRUCTION PROJECT ON STATE ROUTE 1 AT JULIA PFEIFFER BURNS STATE PARK IN BIG SUR STARTING TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10
BIG SUR – A construction project to repair slopes, restore the roadway and provide traffic control on State Route 1 at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park will begin tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10, Caltrans officials announced today.
Roadwork consists of daytime work, consisting of one-way reversing traffic control, Mondays through Fridays from 6 am to 7 pm.
NOTE: Motorists can expect delays of up to 20 minutes.
The contractor for this $600,000 construction project is Robert J. Franks Construction of Redding, CA and should complete by this fall.
Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when
driving through highway work zones.

This would have been great to know more than 24 hours in advance. This has some serious impacts on not only myself but many others. 6am to 7pm??? 20 minutes delays?

The park has been closed for a few weeks now and that has only increased the weekend craziness as folks trespass, knock down fencing, park in more dangerous places than usual etc. as they *need* to see that waterfall. I can only imagine construction might well make it worse (especially at weekends if construction isn’t occurring but their equipment is still around taking up some of the nearby pullouts.)
Oh, I hope not…but will let you know after I go through tomorrow – TWICE!

If you go south to Cambria, watch out for surveyors, engineers, flagmen, and equipment south of Ragged Point, north of San Carpoforo. Heading north today, I came around a blind right curve and had to slam on my brakes to avoid rear-ending the car in front of me that was at the back of a line stopped for a flagman. I was lucky no one else came up behind me or I may have been rear ended. It wasn’t the best place to have traffic stopped, that’s for sure.

gee, ‘construction expected to be completed by fall’… so all summer/6 months and the budget is $600,000? sounds like a bargain. or a really small crew just mouse-nibbling at the task? ah well, summer/tourists/hiway 1 is all a circus anyway. I wonder how they will ‘provide traffic control’ as a long-term upgrade? can’t be traffic lights, can it?

I doubt they are going to install any kind of one way traffic control. I believe it will just be signage, maybe a reduced speed limit? Are they allowed to do that?
