Saw this spot this morning. Very small rocks at 8am. We turned around and took the 101. Lots of people driving through just to be turned around in ragged point. Thanks for all you do
Is your source certain about the location? Looks more like 35.76964600269076, -121.32210637788604 to me.
Since the highway was built in the 1930's, the rocks have had almost a century to weather. Rocks with a lot of interstices absorbs a lot of water fast--down to the point where it's competent; then it runs along the top of the competent rock, lubricating it and allowing things like algae, fungi, and molds to grow, making the interface even slicker. That whole highway needs a complete assessment for instability potential. On the 2021 satellite map, there is a bad of dark pavement running from the rockslope to the other side of the road. I wonder about input from the facility just over that little ridge that was under construction in 2017 . . .
