  • Kate, is this near Griggs or mid-valley? I can't tell. Thank-you for the head's up. We hear the fire engines in the Village.

  • The large shrubs in this view, if trimmed up a bit (a third, half, two-thirds?), would allow them to survive the fire in the tinder because it wouldn't be able to "ladder" up into their crowns. Removing the severed branches and other dead fuels also would minimize damage, make any fire easier to suppress, and possibly intercept a significant fraction of airborne embers. Reducing the height of subshrubs also would help. No chainsaws needed, lopping shears and folding pruning saws at most. Cheaper, easier, prettier, and FAR more EFFECTIVE that crashing around with chain saws. And do not leave chips!

  • And . . . https://www.google.com/maps/@36.5251787,-121.813802,3a,90y,358.68h,103.48t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sbFH-gXSP2K2_boJpkaqSNw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

De-limb the pine branches up a little higher. For small pines, as seen downhill from the more mature ones, leave at least a fourth of the live needles, and trim adjacent subshrubs down to about two inches until the young pines get bigger. Remove (power nozzle on hose, long bamboo poles, or ?) any dead needles or leaves from crowns and crotches as well as the ground.

  • I was out with my horses at Vista Nadura and saw smoke. At first, looked like maybe over-enthusiastic barbecue. But as more smoke was visible, I hear CalFire (a couple of blocks down CV road) start out with multiple engines, water tanker, then more sirens from over the hill. They had the fire knocked down in 15/20 min. Any word on the cause?

    • If you are referring to the one in the field across from the Safeway, mid-Valley, it was started by the landowner moving his field, per his grand daughter’s comment on FB.
