CREWS CONTINUE ASSESSMENT OF HIGHWAY 1 DAMAGE
AND MOBILIZE FOR REPAIRS
MONTEREY / SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTIES – Caltrans maintenance teams were able to perform assessments today within the entirety of the Highway 1 closure which remains in effect from Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County to Palo Colorado Rd. in Monterey County.
Crews responded to multiple active slides within the closure area today.
Crews were also able to reach Paul’s Slide (PM 22), where rocks, dirt, and water have breached parts of the catchment area behind K-rail and fencing. Highway 1 at Paul’s Slide is impassible at this time. The gates at Paul’s Slide are closed and will remain closed 24-hours a day.
The northern limit of the Highway 1 closure was moved north on Jan. 9, to Palo Colorado Rd. at Post Mile 61.5 at the request of CHP. Caltrans will continue to take advantage of any break in inclement weather to assess road conditions and provide access as long as the conditions are favorable for public travel.
Travelers from the south will encounter a closure on Highway 1 at the elephant seal viewing area, four miles north of San Simeon. A significant slide, one mile south of Ragged Point, extends over both lanes of travel. As a result, the highway is impassible at this location and is expected to restrict access to Ragged Point from the south for several weeks.

We left Palo Colorado headed north on Hwy 1 at about 1:30 PM Tuesday. There were some signs, facing southbound traffic, stating that the road was closed ahead, but there was no physical blockage, no CHP. Returning at about 6 PM, same story - Hwy 1 was open headed south.
