CAL FIRE Awards Wildfire Prevention Grant to
Community Association of Big SurFive-year Grant Sustains and Expands the Fire Adapted Big Sur Big Sur, CA: The Community Association of Big Sur (CABS) is pleased to announce that it has received a California Climate Investments Wildfire Prevention Grant award of $553,977 from the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). This award funds the five-year expansion of the Fire Adapted Big Sur (FABS), a program which improves the fire resiliency of the Big Sur community.

In its first year, FABS focused on landscape treatments, including applying for and receiving grant funding for fuel breaks; Firewise USA®-recognition for Big Sur neighborhoods, and; wildfire-resiliency community outreach. Looking ahead, FABS will address safety & evacuation, infrastructure & business protection, and fire-related public health. FABS partners in this work include Big Sur Fire, the Fire Safe Council for Monterey County, the Resource Conservation District of Monterey County, and now, CAL FIRE.

About FABS: Fire Adapted Big Sur was launched in June 2022 to improve wildfire resiliency for the Big Sur community by implementing actions defined in the Fire Adapted Communities component of the National Cohesive Wildfire Management Strategy. This program was created by Joe Stutler, Co-Chair of the Western Regional Strategy Committee, Cohesive Strategy, and Frank Pinney, Chief-Emeritus, Big Sur Fire. Butch Kronlund, then-Executive Director of CABS, launched the program as a CABS initiative. The first year was privately funded through a collaboration of Nepenthe, Post Ranch Inn, Alila Ventana Big Sur, and the Coastlands residential community.

  • Wonderful to read! Hoping that my neighborhood in Boulder Creek will become more firewise over time.

  • Today is the third anniversary of CZU Fire (86,509 acres) and the River Fire (48,088 acres) and Friday will be the Carmel Fire's (6,901 acres) third anniversary.

In my experience, Fire Prevention works !.
