Carmel Lagoon Update, 12/28/23

Here is an update on the Carmel Lagoon.

—Lagoon has stabilized at approx 12-ft NGVD29.

—Flooding contained onto 16th st.

—Pumps will be operating throughout the night to keep the lagoon water out of the neighborhood.

—Excavators coming tomorrow at 0900 to assist with pilot channel management unless lagoon level drops.

—Given the height of lagoon and resident concerns, there was another effort tonight to hand dig the channel. Photos attached. (From Monterey County)

  • Thé lagoon needs to be dredged. I grew up on the lagoon. At that time there were very few reeds. It was about four feet deep. We had a small row boat. The deeper water served as a large holding tank for the river. It also was a resting spot for migratinng water birds, cinnamon teel, mallards, geese, and other birds. Dredging would be a simple fix once you got through the 16 committees involved.
