Beginning Friday, September 13, 2024, a No Parking rule goes into effect on Coast Road at Bixby Bridge along Highway 1. Illegally parked cars are subject to fines and towing.
This week, County contractors installed k-rails and no parking signs to prevent parking on Coast Road. An increasing number of visitors and motorists are parking along the highway and on side roads creating dangers.

Yay!!!! Finally!!!
It's about time! Action way overdue.
Must protect our Beloved Coast Roads from rabid disrespectful tourists at all costs. As an L.A. transplanted resident of the Monterey Peninsula for the last 47 years, My 1st experience of becoming part of the Local Community, was learning about true respect for our beautiful environment. Just blown away at how some visitors are just so clueless.
Thank you Kate for spreading the word!! Let's hope the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce put out the word to the world as well as the County, Caltrans, MCCVB and all the other agencies ... funny, I had envisioned a lot more than 3 k-rails needed for this job!! Good luck!!
Excellent news. It would have been nice if was in effect on Memorial Day but better late than never.
....and officers will ask those who do park to move.... I want to see the bodycam footage of THAT ongoing and endless foolishness ! PLEASE !
Yesterday 9/13 Friday, driving by Bixby around 3:30 PM at the entrance to OCR it's a somewhat wide opening when you first pull in before the K- rails narrow the access. There were five cars parked at the entrance of OCR nose in, pointing north toward the hill right in front of no parking signs. I heard tourist are also parking more at the pullout south of the bridge and walking back north along the narrowly shouldered stretch to see the bridge.
And it's not even a holiday! Any enforcement there to shoo them away or ticket them Richard?
CHP was seen yesterday just blocking the entire entrance to OCR not allowing any cars to enter. It's pretty obvious people don't care about any signs and once one person parks in front of the no parking sign many others just follow the lead. You might have also noticed how more and more people are parking on the east side of Highway 1 by Point Lobos now right in front of no parking signs. The second CHP leaves it's back to no one caring about any signs. Richard I also noticed that Caltrans mowed the side of the highway just south of Bixby Bridge, and people are filling up that small turnout, then starting to park up the hill. There is a steep drop-off on the west and not enough room to fit a car so they end up parking over the white line so the passenger does not have to get out and fall off the cliff.
Plant trees and section off the entire area as plant rehabilitation.
Monterey can market the only way to see and photograph the bridge is by boat tour, this should seperate the tourist into those that come to love nature and those that don't.
