Appointed appellate counsel for indigent defendants (retired.) I have lived in Big Sur since 1984, first on the north coast, and on the South Coast since 1989.

  • I’ve been up there four times since the highway re-opened and am stunned by the high intensity impact of the Dolan fire. I’ve lost count…. ‘85, ‘94, ‘99, ‘08 previous fires on NF road? This far exceeds those, especially near the summit. Standing dead trees will be falling for the next 20 years.

  • It’s a stark contrast to see the greenery of new growth and the skeletons of the trees.

I know the locals carry chainsaws in their vehicles but the unsuspecting tourist generally do not & may find themselves trapped on the wrong side of a downed tree. Another risk when entering the backcountry.
