Wildflowers & Weather

I don’t know about where you are, but it has been mighty cold up here all day. Have been inside, running the heater to stay warm. BUT my internet seems to be cooperating at the moment, so will upload a few of the photos I took on Wednesday of the incredible wildflower displays.

Poppies on a Hill

Douglas Irish

Douglas Iris, close-up

Calochortus albus - Fairy Lanterns

Sticky Monkey Flower

Nettle, perhaps?

Western Columbine

I also have photographs of owl’s clover, lupine, vetch, indian paintbrush, and others. It is hard to keep up with all the wildflowers in bloom right now!

  • these are glorious. Thank you for posting. It is cold down under too as we head down into winter. I would love to see more of your wildflowers if you get the time and your internet behaves :)

  • I'm certainly not in the league with your more expert botanical visitors, but I don't believe woodmint, the one you've labeled 'nettle?', is an actual nettle though some folks do call it hedge nettle (which is a name I use for a different and very annoying stinging plant that comes up in my flower beds). It's a member of the Lamiaceae family, I think Stachys bullata californica. The regular stinging nettle is Urtica dioica.

Isn't it a lovely and long wildflower year?

  • Oh Kate! I absolutely am drawn to these. I really like the composition of the "Poppies on a hill". Their fragile bulk dividing the space between earth and sky is mesmerizing. "Douglas iris, close up" and "Western Columbine" capture my immediate attention due to the wonderful warm darks and clarity in the image. Grand, just Grand. :)
