Ruby’s

There is a place here in Redondo Beach that is my mother’s favorite. It has become ours, as well. The food tastes as good as this place looks.

In the midst of all the sadness, we have made this our place for lunch. It doesn’t hurt that it is so photogenic.

Ruby

50's diner

Parade of stools

Fat tires

Gumball Gas

Memorabilia

Now, just to raise my spirits, would you mind letting me know which of these is your favorite? I am having a hard time making up my mind. If you want, you can let me know why, but otherwise, a vote will be anonymous. Thank you.

  • I wanted to vote for all of them, great pictures, rocketed back to childhood scenery. You make me want to go there. Nice to get this uplifting post, Kate. Best to you all.

  • I agree; they're all great photos. I'd love to see the place when it's full of people. Love a good diner (and they're hard to find these days). They were a real fixture of my childhood when I used to travel up to Maine with my folks (a 12 hr journey). You and your mom are on my mind, Kate. Be well.

  • BSK:
The last time I was at Ruby's was to take my grandfather to lunch, and we bought a lemonade to go for my hospitalized, terminally-ill grandmother. I brought it back to her at the hospital, and lined up the straw with her lips and told her to sip. Then we sat with her for a few hours. Then we went home for the night. A call came, first thing in the morning, that she had passed during the night. She loved Ruby's lemonade, so, in a bittersweet way, bringing her that lemonade was a comfort at the end.

  • The Ruby's in these pictures is much cooler on the outside than the newer one at the end of the Huntington Beach pier, but the inside looks pretty similar. I'm glad that you're having lunches at your mom's favorite spot. She's with you in spirit. I voted for the picture of Ruby.

  • I voted for the Parade of Stools, because it is visually striking, and subliminally I think reminds me that one thing leads to another ...

  • My mouth is watering for a burger, Kate. I like them all as they work together to define the place. Then I narrowed to the first one of the building and the one titled "Parade of Stools". I chose the stools only because I love the way the light plays on them. Wonderful collection of photos of your favorite place!
