Highway Update – Paul’s Slide is unstable

From Cal Trans this evening: All photos were previously posted on my blog from readers.
MUD CREEK HAD A MAJOR SLIDE/SLIP OUT YESTERDAY AT 9:30 PM, SATURDAY, MAY 20—IT LOST MILLIONS OF CUBIC YARDS OF MATERIAL AND REMAINS IMPASSABLE. PAUL’S SLIDE HAS ALSO HAD SLIDE ACTIVITY AND HAS CEASED WORK FOR THE TIME BEING. HOWEVER, IT WILL ALLOW LOCAL RESIDENTS AND DELIVERY VEHICLES ACCESS TOMORROW, MONDAY, MAY 22 BUT CAN CLOSE DOWN AT ANY TIME WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE. CALTRANS NEEDS TO RE-ASSESS THE SITUATION AT BOTH LOCATIONS AND DETERMINE WHETHER LOCAL ACCESS CAN REMAIN THROUGH PAUL’S SLIDE. NEXT UPDATE WILL BE BY MID-DAY ON TUESDAY, MAY 23.

**************************************************************************************

STATE ROUTE 1 REMAINS FULLY CLOSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS AT MUD CREEK DUE TO CONTINUED SLIDE ACTIVITY. DELIVERY VEHICLES AND LOCAL RESIDENTS WILL NEED TO USE NACIMIENTO-FERGUSSON EXIT SOUTH OR TO CLEAR THE ACCESS TIMES AT PAUL’S SLIDE.

  • we were worried about excessive use of the coast, too many people loving the place to death and etc, looks like that problem has been solved for a while.

    • Except for here in the back country of the South Coast, which will be overrun this weekend. But the overall nature of the visitors will change from foreign visitors to 20-30 somethings wanting to party all weekend, bbq, drinking, off-roading, shitting, trashing, and otherwise destroying the landscape.

  • ah, true, sadly. indeed if anything same number of those with less dispersal, dang...

  • While tourism is what keeps many in the Big Sur area alive - I totally understand the dislike of immature and destructive behavior that some can have when they arrive in the area (any area) on holiday! Prayers and positive energy to Caltrans in their continued effort to repair what mother nature has caused in this beautiful area. Also sending positive energy and strength to the "locals" in dealing with these road issues as well as anything else that may cause stress!! Enjoy the quiet while you can - the crowds and craziness will be back!!
