CALTRANS ANNOUNCES NEXT CONVOY TO PFEIFFER CANYON BRIDGE

MONTEREY COUNTY – Caltrans will continue the process of delivering construction equipment and materials to the site of the demolished Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge on State Route 1 via Nacimiento-Fergusson Road from US Highway 101 on Thursday, June 1.

These convoys will be escorted by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and will include intermittent closures of Nacimiento-Fergusson Road on Thursday, June 1 from 8 am until 7 pm. Motorists wishing to travel east/west in the morning must do so before the first convoy begins. On Thursday, motorists will encounter delays during the movement of these four convoys westbound from 8 am to 10 am and 2 pm to 4 pm and eastbound from 11 am to 1 pm and from 5 pm to 7 pm. All vehicles must not exceed 30 feet in length and a weight of 15 tons.

The Thursday convoys will include the remaining 50% of the rock and sand necessary to create concrete abutments for the new bridge. Future convoys will transport two mobile batch plants, two concrete boom pump trucks, vacuum trucks and rebar cages. This equipment will be used to construct concrete abutments and overall construction of the new Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge (PM 45.52).

The steel girders for the new bridge continue being fabricated at a plant in Vallejo, CA. They have begun being moved to a plant near Stockton for painting before they are shipped to Pfeiffer Canyon. This $24 million project is expected to be open to the public in mid to late September.

  • Kate,

Hidden within all of this- little bridge not a problem at all- bring on the convoys.

    • I think its more likely, we don't know if little bridge is a problem or not, but we have to take that chance. I hope they are right.

  • Hopefully we will hear of verified re-inspection of the bridge. It would make sense for them to check the bridge and to let people know they have done so. Would put a lot of people's mind at ease as well as being "responsible" and just flat out smart.
Otherwise people are just left hanging with doubt and questions and "bad feelings".

  • Get a Bailey Bridge ready. It is a high-stakes risk with no backup plan should things go wrong. They've gotta pull their heads out of the sand.

    • No, the post tells of future deliveries, just the last of the sand and gravel, etc.
