As Dave Nelson reminds me, all us OG residents call this spot where the slide is “Wing Gulch” as it is on my maps of the coastal slides. The young ‘uns at Caltrans are calling this Dolan Point. In reality, there is about 3/10ths of a mile difference in locations, Dolan Point being on the north end. Dave also reminded me that this terracing is what they did 20 years ago…so I guess that means this spot should be good for 20 years when completed, right? Here are the photos.

You folks in Sur sure have had deal with a lot these past few years. My heart goes out to you all.
Looks like a "surficial" failure to me. What are they doing with the 'dozer?
I imagine they use it to push dirt around.
Big Sur residents have had a lot to deal with. Mother Nature we can deal with but the bureaucrat head of CalTrans is the most frustrating. Notice how Paul's Slide opened for convoys immediately after the 2 slides of Big Crk? If that had been done many months previous when the road was still passable those on the south coast could have a town trip & travel to their jobs north of Paul's, of 1.5 + hours vs. 4! That's 1 way folks!
100% agree. Almost feels like a publicity stunt to conveniently be able to open Paul’s THE DAY that these slides happen. Goes from “unsafe” to cross Paul’s to totally fine, within 24 hours. To open so they don’t have to deal with the bad press of us south coasters bringing in our own helicopter emergency food drops between the slides

Caltrans is the worst. They’ve bought off the Coastal Commission who approve all their plans regardless how destructive they are ..
Caltrans is there to make the road passable while ensuring the protection and safety to local residence and the general public.
Locals are a strong self-reliant tribe connected to the land and sea.
Patience is tested and tempers run thin.
Both have chosen whether career or dwelling space to be in this beautiful and unpredictable environment.
And those of us who have been here awhile know the highway could have been passable to convoys much of this winter and all of last summer.
