Dear Big Sur Kate,
In an effort to better communicate with Big Sur residents regarding upcoming filming activities, this is to notify you of an upcoming permitted film shoot scheduled for 12/2/19 and 12/3/19 from 6:00am to 5:00pm with a 2-3 hour break between approximately 11am-2pm. Our work will require intermittent traffic control (ITC) at and near Bixby Bridge and Hwy 1.
As per our permit, a portion of the Bixby Bridge turnout may be used for parking of a few production vehicles.
We will be hiring California Highway Patrol officers to facilitate the ITC – ensuring public safety and access with only brief traffic holds. Most of our trucks and equipment will be stationed a few miles away on at Rocky Point Restaurant.
We have taken all steps to ensure that the required permits have been obtained and will comply with restrictions necessary for a safe and efficient shoot.
The production company would like to show its appreciation to the community with a donation to Midcoast Fire Brigade and Big Sur Fire Brigade.

Another “permitted” shoot at the most exploited Big Sur site. We should track down who the money is going to, most likely the county and demand that it be directed for Big Sur needs, including traffic control at this very site!
Cal Trans has to give the permit, as well as the Monterey County Film Commission. Would be interesting to follow the money trail…
Time for a moratorium on all filming in the 5th district….let’s highlight the Salinas Valley for a change!
I find it so irresponsible for state and local agencies to still issue permits to film at this problematic location. When I talk to some of the involved parties they seem to think that I’m concerned about the inconvenience to locals of the actual days they are filming. It’s actually safer and sometimes faster getting through the Bixby zone when they are there because there’s actually law enforcement moving people along and making sure people don’t park illegally. It’s the fact that these shoots just advertise and promote more people to come and stop at the Bridge to get their selfie. There is and will never be enough parking infrastructure for the amount of visitors here. It just shows how disconnected County and State officials are to the issues in Big Sur. Out of sight out of mind!
Just means that Rocky Creek bridge , turnout and surrounding private property will become the new gore point for tourists incursions. S/b fun watching the throngs lined up in 60-100+ car backups .
It’s too bad the community of Big Sur can’t “trademark” images of Bixby Bridge, like the sharks of Pebble Beach Co. did with photographs and paintings of the Lone Cypress 20-30 years ago (legally, they didn’t have USPTO trademark law behind them, but simply their threat of expensive lawsuits kept artists in line to their wishes; as an aside, many of their registered trademarks, i.e. logos, were abandoned in 2016). If it were possible to trademark, then $$$ could go to Big Sur, in addition to the Film Commission, Cal Trans, and CHP. What’s that thing about supply and demand? Given the limited supply, as demand goes up, so should the prices?
I’d be curious to know how much money Valkyr Productions donated to Big Sure Fire and Mid-Coast Fire Brigade. I have to give them credit to send you a note and make a donation. At the very least, they’re trying, which seems better than other filming operations.
From what I’ve heard about the newish owners of Rocky Point Restaurant, I’m sure they’re making big bucks to allow trucks and equipment to be stationed there.
As someone who visits property just up Old Coast Road, I wonder if the production co. considers the dirt road as a “turnout”. I’ve been frustrated when it’s completely blocked by vehicles who don’t realize it’s an actual road instead of a parking lot. Grr.
I gather Caltrans has the option to postpone this filming on the basis of poor weather conditions. When would this be announced?
