Upcoming Storm(s), 1/29/24

From the NWS, Bay Area, who advises keeping up with the latest forecasts:

“Slight update to the forecast for the upcoming storm on Wednesday. Expect issues if traveling on Wednesday, especially in the North Bay and the coastal ranges. Roadway flooding and shallow landslides are likely.”

I am particularly fond of “shallow landslides are likely” as opposed to deep, I would guess. (I looked it up: “Landslide processes involve the downslope movement of soil or rock under the effect of gravity (USGS, 2004). Shallow landslides (SLs) are a subset of these processes that usually involve soil masses less than 2 m thick (Phillips et al., 2021), generally sliding translationally over the failure surface at or near discontinuities in the soil profile or the bedrock contact.” https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0925857421002913)

Fun week coming up, it looks like. Stay safe, everyone!

  1. Shallow sslides & erosion was what there was here(chaney Ave. area of cayucos) last year. Depth was the same 3 meters = about 6 feet. One over 60% slope slid down and dumped mud all over Gilbert Ave. The local Post office refused to get the mail truck wheels muddy & local mail was held for months. Numerous slides occurred all over hang glider hill. Some were actually deeper than 6 feet. Three homes had hydrostatic water instrusion/damage through their bottom floor concrete slab. Haven’t had it again yet this year but we haven’t had as much rain in as short a period of time as last year. North main at hwy41 in Morro Bay flooded up to about 4 feet because the bridges for morro creek and little morro creek under North main and hwy one were choked off with debris and the water backed up. Hwy one was closed at two locations due to flooding. A friend with a marine business had boats float off their trailers ans machine tools and vehicle engines & drive trains filled with mud. There was hundreds of thousands of $ damage. It was a mess. North main street was closed for weeks. The flooding occured two separate times.
Fingers are crossed for these upcoming storm systems. Most storm water paths have been cleared.
