Mike Harlan, the son of the original road warrior, Don Harlan, sent me these and I know some of you will remember this.

And here is another postcard from the 60’s, sent to me by Janet

I have kept a business card from PVC but it doesn’t have Mary’s name on it. I must have collected it in the late 70s/ early 80’s.
I remember going there when I would camp at Plaskett Creek in the late 60s.
Funny how it has the Cambria 927 prefix on the phone number! Love this post!
Thanks for the memories Kate ….Of course I remember Pacific Valley…Alan
Richard and I would often go ther for coffee during our Hudson Ranch days
We moved from the Chicago area to Boulder Creek in 2021, but have traveled to Big Sur yearly since the mid-80s. I recall having a delicious grilled fish sandwich at the Pacific Valley Center.
Anyone remember L’Auberge a Mi-chemin in Gorda?
The few landlines up here are all 927 prefix and always have been — the school, the USFS station, Gorda. Many homes along the highweay. Always.
Every time my husband and I would drive by there after it closed He’d say they always had the best pies. The wild flowers in the spring are still beautiful
We only had to dial 4 digits to reach anyone with a 927 # in Cambria.
Later, at Piedras Blancas , we graduated to an 8 party line and had to dial the 927 part.
I remember it well! I worked there when Tom and Hatty ran the place! I replaced Irma Gould when they moved to Cambria. I went to school with Mike and knew his parents well!
I’m currently writing a book about my life as a child, growing up in Big Sur. I’m hoping to get it published by July, this year!!
Gary..about ‘best beaches’…why not just whisper that to trusted acquaintances..we have enough exposure thanks to every other publication in the world
I don’t remember that far back, but I’ll never forget P.V. The Jade festival when Rosalia was Jade Queen and the day it went up in flames
Now days, part of the lost coast.
I remember an early morning camping @ Kirk Creek and hearing an Ancient two cylinder outboard from somewhere at sea out in the Valley of the Pacific .
Turns out he had a 14′ Aluminum boat and a commercial fishing license and landed with the surf on the beach at the day use just South of Kirk Creek.
He had gone out to fish well before sunup to beat the daily prevailing winds.
His market was the Pacific Valley Store & Restaurant where we ate the fruits of his labor.
Hook’em & Cook’em.
Those were the days.
I loved that place. Dave used to drive down here to Los Osos in the mid to late 80s to pick up Pepperidge Farm cookies and goldfish from me to take back to the store
Not a Big Sur local, but having camped there every spring since 1974, as well as travels other times I have immense love for the sacredly beautiful country. I still have several pair of earrings from the Pacific Valley Store and felt the heartache when it burned, hoping it would be rebuilt. Now marveling at the hillside each visit, including all those giant rocks in midst of the flowers.
I used to see the boat hanging from the bluff on Mill Creek, always astounded at how they got it up and down, let alone out through the rough surf. I wonder if that is the one that FlapZ referred to.
