I am trapped here. Even though the situation is scary but I would like to thank all the police men, Road workers and the locals who drove by just to give us updates and tell us where we can find food, gas and wifi.

That’s the Big Sur spirit. Mother Nature gave you an Easter Gift. Ennjoy!

We’re stuck here as well but everyone has been extremely helpful in trying to get us updates. What worries us the most is not knowing when we can get through, food, where to stay, etc. Someone told us it could be a few days…yikes!
Thank you for posting updates.

In the past, helicopters have been brought in to rescue people. Our Emergency Service personnel are experts at this. We have been known to have the US Army reserves, Coast Guard, or who and whatever is necessary help out. Just think of the adventure you will be able to share with family ad friends!!!

Incredible photos! Also so sad. Thank you Mary Moore and Ivy Jayne Lavelle.

@BigSurKate what are your favorite activities to do in between the southbound and northbound closures?
Loading...
Sing with the birds. Talk to the trees. Dance in the rain. Write and read poetry. Right now, I am also making room to take care of my demented, addled, Alzhimer’s challenged ex. And my number one activity? Find the beauty and humor in everyone and everything.

Hello Kate, thank you for your positive attitude and the information you provide. If I understand, this problem completely isolates big sur and makes it inaccessible for the coming days.
Hi! I’m a news producer for Weather.com – We’d like to feature the pictures from the slip-out for a story today. Can you please put in contact with Mary Moore, remainder by Ivy Jayne LaVelle.

Yes, sing with the birds – talk to the trees and listen to Mother Nature – the mystery of it all!
Ivy Jayne LaVelle is on FB. Should be easy to find.

That is correct. It has happened before, so we are not unfamiliar with the horrific logistics of this problem. Helicopters will be brought in by the military to transport people out of the area and to get supplies into the area. It will be days before this will be worked out.

Coming from PG, will one have access to Point Lobos State Park? The slide is South of Point Lobos, correct?

There is no cell service in most of Big Sur Valley. Don’t worry she will be taken care of.

That is correct.

I believe back in the late 50’s the Army Corp of Engineers (could be wrong as to who did this) created a massive concrete berm, just below this section of the highway, that has protected this section for all these years. Hope the repairs are not structurally demanding or the remaining road so unsafe so as to prevent controlled passage for the residents. The Big Sur community just continues to be challenged by continuing highway closures. Prayers to all on this Easter Sunday.

To the person looking for their sister, Stacey—much of the Big Sur coastline does not have cell or internet service even normally/not during our storms, so she is likely just not in a place where her phone works.
Frustrating for you, for sure, but wanted to ease your worry.
The photos are incredible. Thank you for posting these tremendous pictures that allow the readers to recognize the intensity of the problem.

My father was one of those CCC boys who operated a bulldozer on SR150 (maybe here too?), also bedeviled by slope failure. Does anyone know the state of the art for fill embankments in those day?
GREAT pix! Are there any earlier ones that show the extent of the masonry and footings? Unless it’s buried too deeply, measuring the masonry fragments could provide interesting information . . .
Was the pipe leaking before the failure? Even a tiny leak adds up.

Back in the day, why in the world would the highway department believe building a highway on the edge of a cliff would be a sound idea??? Any logical person would know THAT was such a lame idea!!

We drove over the spot twice on Friday before it gave way (visiting from Minnesota). We wondered/doubted if the spot would hold up in that rain. Thanks for the updates and your help and hospitality to all who are “stuck” in the Big Sur area right now. Judging by your vibe here, it’s a pretty great group with whom to be stranded.
My mom and I used to go eat at a place called Nepenthe. Is that still there?

Kate,
Thank you so much for all this information you provide. My wife and I and another couple we are friends with have reservations at Fernwood next week. Clearly those will need to be cancelled – we’ll look forward to seeing Big Sur again sometime hopefully not too far in the future.

Yes, and it is coming up on its 75th anniversary!

Yes, call and cancel. You should get a refund, given the circumstances.

We love Big Sur!! It’s the most beautiful place in California and it’s full of amazing people. I hope the road will reopen soon 🤞 In the meantime stay safe and remember that lots of people are thinking about you guys. Sending you the best vibes🍀

I love in the Topanga area in SoCal. This state sure has its work cut out for it during the next year! So many roads closed!
Nothing that sheet piling, rock gabions and $$$$$$ can’t fix
