Travelers may encounter a 15-minute delay. Highway 1: Postmile 53.30 – Postmile 54.3: April – July One-way traffic controls will be in place along southbound Highway 1 between Postmile 53.3 and Postmile 54.3 for slide and temporary signal work. Highway 1: Rocky Creek Bridge – Rocky Creek Viaduct: Long Term One-way traffic controls will be in place along northbound and southbound Highway 1 between Rocky Creek Bridge and Rocky Creek Viaduct for bridge work from 6 am to 6 am. Highway 1: Ventana Entrance – Nepenthe (North Entrance): Long Term Alternating one-way traffic controls will be in place along northbound and southbound Highway 1 between Ventana Entrance and Nepenthe (North Entrance) for bridge work from 7 am to 5 pm. Highway 1: Garrapata Ridge Road: July 20 – July 23 There will be one lane closure along northbound Highway 1 at Garrapata Ridge Road for utility work from 8 am to 3 pm. Highway 1: Big Creek Bridge – Big Creek Vista Point: July 20 One-way traffic controls will be in place along northbound and southbound Highway 1 between Big Creek Bridge and Big Creek Vista Point for miscellaneous work from 8 am to 4 pm. Travelers may encounter a 10-minute delay. Highway 1: Little Sur River Bridge – Hurricane Point: July 20 One-way traffic controls will be in place along northbound and southbound Highway 1 between Little Sur River Bridge and Hurricane Point for pavement repair work from 9 am to 3 pm. Travelers may encounter a 15-minute delay. Highway 1: Dolan Creek Bridge: July 21 – July 24 There will be one lane closure along northbound Highway 1 at Dolan Creek Bridge for utility work from 8 am to 3 pm. Highway 1: Lime Creek Bridge – Esalen: July 21 – July 23 One-way traffic controls will be in place along northbound Highway 1 between Lime Creek Bridge and Esalen for utility work from 9 am to 3 pm. Travelers may encounter a 5-minute delay. Highway 1: 1 Mile North of Point Sur Lighthouse – Point Sur Lighthouse: July 21 – July 24 There will be full closure of all lanes along Highway 1, beginning one mile north of the Point Sur Lighthouse and ending at the Point Sur Lighthouse for emergency work from 11 pm to 5 am. Travelers may encounter a 30-minute delay. Highway 1: Hurricane Point – Rocky Creek Bridge: July 21 – July 22 One-way traffic controls will be in place along northbound and southbound Highway 1 between Hurricane Point and Rocky Creek Bridge for bridge inspection from 9 am to 3 pm. Travelers may encounter a 15-minute delay. Highway 1: Lucia – Turnout South of Vicente Creek: July 21 One-way traffic controls will be in place along northbound and southbound Highway 1 between Lucia and Turnout South of Vicente Creek for paving operation work from 6:45 am to 3:15 pm. Travelers may encounter a 15-minute delay. Highway 1: Turnout South of Vicente Creek – Lime Creek Bridge: July 22 – July 23 There will be a moving lane closure along northbound and southbound Highway 1 between Turnout South of Vicente Creek and Lime Creek Bridge for mowing work from 6:45 am to 3:30 pm. Travelers may encounter a 15-minute delay. Highway 1: Near New Camaldoli Hermitage – Mill Creek Bridge: July 24 There will be a moving lane closure along northbound and southbound Highway 1 near New Camaldoli Hermitage and Mill Creek Bridge for mowing work from 6:45 am to 3:30 pm. Travelers may encounter a 15-minute delay.

FULL OVERNIGHT CLOSURE OF HIGHWAY 1 NEAR 

POINT SUR SET TO BEGIN TUESDAY, JULY 21

MONTEREY COUNTY — Travelers on Highway 1 near Point Sur will encounter full overnight closures beginning Tuesday, July 21.

This full closure will take place each night from 11 pm to 5 am Tuesday, July 21 through overnight Thursday, July 23 from Post Mile 54.2 to 55.6 just north of the Point Sur Lighthouse.

Crews will be installing temporary sheet piles as part of the Point Sur embankment failure emergency repair that began in February after the failure of the embankment supporting the southbound lane.

Following the overnight closures, this area will return to one-way signalized traffic control.

Message signs will alert travelers in advance of the area under traffic control. Please allow for extra time for your travels through the area. Community members in the area can expect noise overnight associated with this closure.

July 3rd, 2008 is when it started, after 5 pm on a holiday weekend, not unlike this one. We had an overreaching sheriff threatening to arrest any Big Sur residents who came on to Highway One to get to a neighbor who needed help in the time of the Basin Fire. By the 4th of July, I was in full research/phone call and learning modes and stayed that way until long past July 5th, when I posted my first article on this blog. It was my small way of fighting back against an authoritarian figure who we managed to get out of office come the next election. Today, we are facing the very same authoritarian scenario, only on the national scale. So here we are, starting our 19 the year, still fighting the good fight.

Today, thankfully, there are no local wildfires, although other parts of the west are burning, some out of control in Utah and Colorado in particular. Instead, we are dealing with an out-of-control federal government being led by a man who spent his entire life grifting and lying. I will not let him win. This is OUR country’s birthday and as Americans, we can each honor and celebrate the American ideal for which we have always strived in whatever way we choose. We have yet to reach our ideal, but we never give up and we are not going to give up now. Celebrate the America we were — only better. I celebrate those who have and continue to stand up to the menace in OUR house in whatever large or small way we each can. I honor the majority of true Americans who get into the “good trouble” we need to reclaim our history and our legacy.

And on July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, declaring: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
