Elephants Trunck Update #3 – Overnight closures to begin 6/14

“The next phase of the project consists of full overnight closures on Highway 1 from Gorda to Ragged Point and is scheduled to begin on Sunday night, June 14. Roadwork will take place Sunday nights through Friday mornings from 10 pm until 7 am. ”

I didn’t reproduce the rest of the announcement, as it was the same as updates #1 and 2.

Fire responses today

06/02/2015 12:06 LPF-1447. Smoke Check CHEWS RDG . . . . . 36.311 x 121.568

There was a response for a veg fire SLO cnty about 12:30 – Ranch River Rd. …..B3413, A/A340, T74 an 60, engs. 3460, 3484, 3472, 3462, 3441, WT21, D3442, Ques. 1 an 2. Nothing further on this one, so probably jumped on, as evidenced by the resources, and got it under control rapidly.

And yesterday, there was a wildfire in Chachuga called the Valley Fire. I missed that one, but since nothing further, I’m sure it was controlled rapidly.

Yet ANOTHER traffic accident at JP Burns SP

This place has become so very dangerous for locals and.tourists alike. What do we need to do? Have a toll booth to stop traffic, direct traffic, explain that this is a highway? Make people pay for the privilege of driving through here? Is it time to make this a toll road? It may be time to consider such an option due to overcrowding. It’s not getting any better. Remember, only a little over two weeks ago a tourist was killed here when trying to stop her rental car from rolling.

Possible attempted abduction on Highway One

UPDATE: “A description of the perpetrator who attacked one of our [Esalen] staff members this past Friday and his vehicle is as follows: The vehicle is a silver-blue 1990’s Pathfinder. The attacker was male, with dark hair, medium complexion, approximately 6′ tall, his age was approximately 30’s-40’s, and was wearing a hoodie. It was recently reported that there was a similar incident this past February.”

ORIGINAL: “A woman was attacked by a man this morning while running. He grabbed the woman, who got away and then ran to his vehicle, a Silver Blue/grey Pathfinder, the lights were on. The Incident took place on HWY 1 South of Julia Pheifer Burns.”

This was sent to me  by a concerned local. I was asked to delay reporting until it became “public,” by which I mean the police had been able to respond and take their report. But it should serve as an awakening that with the increased amount of people now traveling our highway, increased criminality cannot be far behind. Be situationally aware at all times, as this woman obviously was.

Oil Spill near Refugio Beach north of Santa Barbara

just before noon today, All American Pipeline, a 10 mile long, 24″ off shore pipeline began leaking oil, and it is affecting the beaches and wildlife in the area. They were able to control the leak by about 3 pm, but not before an estimated 21,000 gallons of oil leaked into the ocean. It is washing up on shore and affecting marine birds, fish, and mammals. Clean up is underway, but its impact is yet to be fully determined.

Lost Dog -FOUND

UPDATE – Awesome was found at the SPCA and reunited with his owner.

Awesome, a 3 year-old pit, sweet dog, wandered off From home on Palo Colorado Canyon, about 2 miles from Bottchers Gap Saturday Afternoon. He is about 65 lbs. No tags, and not wearing his collar. Here is his photo. Let’s bring him home. Call owner Mike at home, 831-622-0600 or cell 202-344-7331. (No cell reception at home, but owner in town today checking all local shelters.)

And while we are talking lost dogs, I was reading about a new app called Finding Rover – a facial recognition software for dogs. The app will emit a bark so one’s dog looks directly at the iPhone for a photo, then snap for a head-on shot. It will upload to Finding Rover, and if ever lost, can be sent out to local agencies. I understand MoCo SPCA is using this and thinks it will really help reunite lost dogs with their owners. I have not tried it yet, but will be downloading the app on my next wifi connection.
