  1. I’m willing to bet the signals didn’t malfunction. Someone jumped the red so northbound and southbound cars met in the middle. Once that happens it the perfect gridlock nightmare. Somehow, you have to back dozens of cars up a windy, eleven feet wide lane. And with more cars coming in, where do you back them too? It takes a coordinated effort with at least three officers. All three officers need to be south of the closure, because there are more turnouts there (obviously, there aren’t any turnouts on Rocky Creek Bridge), yet most officers are going to come from the north. They’ll need to find a place to park their patrol cars and walk through the mess. Put a set of doubles in there and you’ll need a big-rig tow up from Paso Robles to pull it backwards. To get the tow there, it would have to drive north in the southbound lane from the Little Sur River, hoping no vehicle stuck in the gridlock turns around. The towtruck will need to turn around in the Funt Ranch driveway, before backing to the last trailer. This gives me nightmares.

  2. We have a place on Old Coast Rd. We came home at around 6pm and found a lot of vehicles full of white knuckled tourists that tried to bypass the holdup by taking an alternate road. Their GPS probably told them it was a good alternative.

  3. GPS is a major hazard. I don’t know if it even works in cities. Out in the wilds it’s worse than useless. I get people in the gallery all the time who can’t believe they’ve been led astray ten miles off course.
And congratulations having a place on Old Coast Road! What a thrill that must be.
Thanks for the heartbeat of Big Sur, Kate (again, as always). I haven’t heard a single radio report mention of ANY problems with Highway 1 south.
