Big Sur Fire and CAL FIRE Responded to a 1 acre vegetation fire 3 miles up the south end of Old Coast Road near Molera. Crews quickly contained the fire. The size of the fire was limited by a quick response and favorable weather conditions. When crews arrived they isolated a down power line around the area for life safety. Our firefighters and engines are now back in quarters. CAL FIRE crews will continue to monitor the fire for the duration.
Thank you everyone for your support!”

According to a source, it is about 1 and 1/2 miles up Old Coast Road and only about 1/4 acre in size. Let’s hope JJ Hill and Big Sur Fire can stomp it out quickly. May have been a downed power line, but not sure yet.
From Big Sur Fire: “Big Sur Fire is responding to a small vegetation fire on private property near the north end of Old Coast Road. We will update as soon as we can but we are primarily focused on our response to the fire. Thank you everyone for your support!”

Caltrans is working closely with the California Highway Patrol to coordinate traffic control and emergency response during closure hours.
In case of an emergency requiring travel across the Bixby Bridge during the hours of the closures, residents and all travelers are advised to call 911

While I already did a July 4h post, I wanted to highlight this photo by the LPNF taken during the Willow Fire, which I shared on social media, but not sure I did here. It has come to symbolize this year’s fire season. These men and women aren’t paid nearly enough for the work they do. We need to lobby our Representatives to increase their pay.
Recently LPNF shared a photo of Captain Justin Grunewald taking a brief break during the Willow Fire and received countless positive messages which have been shared with the firefighters. Pictured is Captain Grunewald with Mill Creek Hotshots Crew 4. The Mill Creek Hotshots are from the San Bernardino National Forest.
are always prohibited on Los Padres National Forest
SOLVANG, Calif. – Los Padres National Forest officials are reminding Fourth of July visitors that the possession or use of fireworks—including the “safe and sane” variety—is always prohibited in the Forest. This year-round prohibition will be strictly enforced throughout the holiday weekend.
The Forest asks that all visitors take the appropriate precautions to prevent accidental wildfires:
Under high fire restrictions, campfires are only permitted in developed campgrounds and must always be attended by a responsible person.
Persons with a valid California Campfire Permit can use portable stoves and lanterns using gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel outside of designated Campfire Use Sites. California Campfire Permits are available for free download from our website (http://www.fs.usda.gov/lpnf). You must clear all flammable material for 10 feet in all directions from your camp stove, have a shovel and water available nearby, and ensure that a responsible person always attends the stove when it is in use.
Smoking is prohibited except within an enclosed vehicle, building, or developed campground.
Internal or external combustion engines require properly installed, functional spark arresters. This requirement is in effect year-round.
Avoid parking vehicles on grass, as hot engines can ignite dry vegetation.
Contact the Ranger Station nearest your destination for the latest conditions.
Due to the alarming rise in illegal campfires associated with dispersed camping across national forests in California, visitors are encouraged to report any signs of dispersed campfires to the nearest Forest Service Officer or Ranger Station. To report a fire or other emergency, call 911.
As always, the Los Padres National Forest reminds the public to plan ahead before visiting their local national forest and to recreate responsibly, including packing out your trash, using good social distancing in crowded areas, and only parking in designated areas.
With minimal winter rainfall to date, live fuel moisture levels across the Forest have not significantly rebounded from last year and remain near critical levels. Predictive weather forecasts indicate persistent, strong offshore wind events through the spring and summer that will likely further reduce fuel moisture levels.
Long-range weather models have consistently shown well below normal precipitation and drier than average weather with a high likelihood of elevated temperatures through the spring months. If these forecasts are accurate, fire activity could occur weeks earlier this year.
Preventing accidental starts from shooting activities under dry conditions is key to protecting life and property. Shooting ranges under permit by Los Padres National Forest monitor and implement preventative measures to avoid accidental starts.
Under this Forest Order, discharging a firearm is prohibited except in the designated target ranges at the Winchester Canyon Gun Club and the Ojai Valley Gun Club. Persons hunting during the open hunting season as specified in the laws of the State of California and having a valid California hunting license are exempt from this Forest Order for the purposes of hunting only.
A violation of this prohibition is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
