Bear pays a visit…

Came home to find that a bear had torn thru a screened window. He then helped himself to a couple boxes of cereal and other things, and made his way thru the house. He located my long-term food storage closet, but was not able to get in. Something or someone may have startled him so he jumped on my bed and out another window. Screen found on ground outside window.

the drips are just something I dropped on my wall that I hadn’t gotten around to cleaning up yet. Guess I will now!

  1. SO Scary, so glad you weren’t home!! Please be careful, now that it’s found food it might be back. I hope you have protection just in case, our community needs & appreciates you!

  2. Just had a bear get into our Shasta cabin. Definitely looking for food. Visited twice before we could clean up.

  3. We had to change lever to round door knob on our place on the Olympic Peninsula. Our Little Bear was waaaaay too clever with his paws.

Airtight food storage might help, but they have awfully good noses. It’s a tough problem. Good luck and stay safe, Kate

  4. I was wondering about the dogs’ reactions also, and then thought they might have been out with you. The bear seems to have known no one was home. Still a very scary situation Kate. Please be extra cautious. We need and love you!

  5. Lady was sniffing around many of the places it had been. Missy was busy cleaning up the cheerios it left behind! Priorities, don’t you know. I like the ammonia left around in rags and dishes while we are gone, and another South Coaster who has bear trouble got an air horn.

  6. Habituation is dangerous–for the bear especially. “A fed bear is a dead bear.”

  7. You’re not on the menu :))
But word to the wise: screens are made for mosquitos … not bears. It’s really important not to let bears feel comfortable in our dens and a) don’t make it easy to get in and b) don’t stand in their escape to get out. We’ve got all the tips you need on our website: savebears.org

  8. Visited a cabin in so cal mtns, they had a simple Radio Shack motion detector with a shrill siren- It kept the bears out of the cabin. Glad you are safe.
