Sunday Photos, 8/18/2024: Regent’s Slide, Highway One, Big Sur

Keeping with this week’s theme of Regent’s Slide on Highway One in Big Sur, here are a couple from Mark Readdie. Note the graffiti on the Big Creek sign. The second was taken 8/7/24:

  1. Looks pretty precarious, and perhaps made more so? I hope that no more stones will be turned until no stone is left unturned . . .

  2. A week ago Thursday we were sitting on that bench where the road curves up to the top of the ridge just marveling at how much more material will need to be removed for this stretch of the highway to be considered “stable” once again. And by stable I mean in the short term, since nothing on this coastline is set in stone, so to speak.
During our visit I was stunned to learn from Sean that the 3.6 earthquake in Bakersfield impacted this slide so much they had to pull all the workers and equipment from the site almost immediately.

  3. I don’t know who Sean is, or how he believes this, but there is no data to support his opinion at this point, as the geotechnical engineers are still collecting the data.

  4. Dragline excavating from north and south while its sliding until it finds equalibrium, then reaccess, stabilize and resurface.
