“A Big Sur friend of mine thought I should reach out to you with this picture of a camper dumping his wastewater along Hwy. one. This happened last week at 7:30 in the morning. I stopped to asked what he was doing and he acted flustered and said he didn’t know how it happened.
Though, I saw the cap in his hand and there was no spillage on the road so to me I am pretty sure he was just dumping. I reported this to the CHP because I am livid at how many people are camping alongside Hwy. 1 with little to no enforcement. The Monterey CHP office said they would give this guy a warning because they have his license plate from my picture. They also said they would try to do more enforcement along the coast. Not sure if that will happen but it is nice to think so. “

Some people have no respect for the beauty of Big Sur, or anywhere… just look at the trash people throw out their windows… all about themselves and no respect for others or our environment… such a shame…
This is just one of many reasons overnight camping/sleeping in vehicles is prohibited along Highway 1 in these scenic turnouts. The problem is there is no enforcement of this County Code. There were residents that went out early in the morning and counted this illegal activity a few years ago. On weekends they averaged around 150 vehicles camping between Carmel and County Line on weekend nights in summertime. Supervisors got the data and went through a long process to up the fine to $1,000. Such a waste of time if you are not going to carry out enforcing the laws are leaders pass. Wouldn’t enforcement bring in revenue to a County that is struggling with a budget deficit?

We put on work gloves and fill trash bags with litter, cigarette butts, used diapers, toilet paper, etc etc that we find at pull outs. And a week later we do it again. Month after month, year after year. The pile of cremains just south of Grimes Point was an interesting variation on illegal dumping – I can almost understand that one. Anyways, the sewage dump is particularly heinous. I’m starting to think these tourists are a problem.
I think the CHP should send him a huge fine not a warning.
I like the large fine idea, and maybe a red flag on his vehicle registration…how would these people like it if waste water, etc. was dumped in their neighborhood. What happened to common sense and decency.

Well everyone knows how I feel about campers dumping on our delicate coast! Thanks for confronting them. Hope your language was a little cleaner than mine was..even though they deserve a good old fashioned railing for that stuff.
enforcement of traffic laws is now considered outmoded all over California. Ask your friends “when was the last time you have seen anyone getting a ticket?”
I’ve been stewing about this, I think the thing that really bothered me was CHP was going to give him a warning. WTF!! Fine that asshole!!
We are assuming the liquid is in the category of urine or poop..yet it could be from.the the sink hold.. Grey water tank..not as bad.
Maybe we can brainstorms rugged lockable wheel lock design..such as authorities use to halt a vehicle from being moved..it slips over & around wheel & tire..disabling …hopefully causing to miss plane- dinner- inn- etc plans & forcing them and anyone they share their vacation tales to from visiting or screwing with ‘our lands’. Yet I can imagine scenarios which might cause issues.. Like being kicked in the head or shotgunned.. Lets explore opportunities!
