Drainage Work at Garrapata State Park

CALTRANS TO PERFORM DRAINAGE WORK ON STATE ROUTE 1 SOUTH OF CARMEL HIGHLANDS ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21

MONTEREY COUNTY – Caltrans will perform drainage work (ditch line cleaning) each way on State Route 1 at Garrapata State Park, south of Carmel Highlands on Thursday, Nov. 21 from 8:30 am to 3 pm with one-way traffic control.

Electronic message boards we be activated to alert the public about this roadwork

performed by the Monterey Maintenance crew and is necessary for roadway storm preparation. 5-10-minute delays are anticipated and roadwork should be complete by that afternoon.

No roadwork will be scheduled during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

Urgent Repairs to Carmel Valley Road

Urgent Road Repairs Scheduled for Carmel Valley Road at MP 13.62


The County of Monterey – Resource Management Agency announces urgent roadway repairs for Carmel Valley Road at MP 13.62. The area of the roadway has deteriorated due to prior storm activity; thus, the County is taking proactive measures before the next storm season.


Work is scheduled to begin November 18 and will continue tentatively through November 27, 2019. Construction activities will include removal and replacement of the damaged storm drain culvert, installation of a catch basin for drainage and re-pavement of the affected roadway.


Repair work hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Efforts will be made to accommodate the morning AM and evening PM peak travel hours and avoid periodic lane closures during these times. In general, commuters should anticipate ten-(10) minute to fifteen-(15) minutes additional travel time due to periodic lane closures and delays.


Message boards will be installed Thursday, November 7th on Carmel Valley Road to alert the public of the upcoming repairs and anticipated traffic delays.

CALTRANS TO BEGIN ELECTROCHEMICAL CHLORIDE EXTRACTION PROJECT ON BIG CREEK BRIDGE ON WEDNESDAY, NOV. 6

BIG SUR COAST– Caltrans will begin a construction project to extend the life of the Big Creek Bridge on Highway 1, 27 miles south of Big Sur on Wednesday, Nov. 6.Electrochemical Chloride Extraction (ECE), will be used to remove chloride ions from the concrete and reinstate the passivity of the bridge’s steel reinforcement. Details are as follows:

Wednesday, Nov. 6 through Friday, Nov. 8

  • Highway 1 at Big Creek will experience intermittent lane closures with one-way traffic control from 7 am to 6 pm through Friday, Nov. 8 to mobilize equipment
  • Motorists can expect 10 to 15-minute traffic delays

Monday, Nov. 11 through Friday, Nov. 15

  • Same closure time and location through Friday, Nov. 15 to install scaffolding under bridge—equipment will be crossing the roadway and delays of up to 15 minutes can also be expected.

The ECE process extends the life of concrete structures/the Big Creek Bridge.

NOTE: Big Creek Bridge will be restricted to legal trucks only, no permit loads will be allowed on the bridge until the project is completed.

The contractor for this $10.5 million construction project is Truesdell Corporation of CA, Inc from Tempe, AZ. The project is scheduled to be complete in the Summer of 2021.

ROAD AND LANE CLOSURES SCHEDULED FOR November 3 – November 9 

MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for Monterey County from Sunday, November 3 through Saturday, November 9 – newest information is in red. Please keep in mind that construction work is weather-dependent. 

Highway 1: Highway 1 – Lime Creek Bridge: November 4 – November 8   
One-way traffic controls will be in place on northbound and southbound Highway 1 between the Monterey County Line and Lime Creek Bridge for paving work along the highway from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Highway 1: Pfeiffer Burns State Park: November 4 – November 5   
One-way traffic controls will be in place on northbound and southbound Highway 1 at Pfeiffer Burns State Park for drainage work along the highway from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Highway 1: Big Creek Bridge: November 4 – November 8   
One-way traffic controls will be in place on northbound and southbound Highway 1 at Big Creek Bridge for bridge work from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday – Thursday; and 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday.

Highway 1: Bixby Creek Bridge – Hurricane Point: November 4 – November 8   
One-way traffic controls will be in place on northbound and southbound Highway 1 between Bixby Creek Bridge and Hurricane Point for striping and paving work along the highway from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Highway 68: Piedmont Avenue – State Route 1 (Pacific Grove to Monterey): November 3 – November 8   
One-way traffic controls will be in place along eastbound and westbound Highway 68 between Piedmont Avenue and State Route 1 for drainage work along the highway from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Oh, joy. I am going north next week to the tune of 3 construction zones, not counting the ever-present Paul’s Slide with flaggers and signals. For some reason, there the flaggers let the SB traffic though at a ratio of 3 to 1 to the NB traffic.

HIGHWAY 1 TRAFFIC CONTROL NEAR RAGGED POINT CONTINUES NEXT WEEK/NO OVERNIGHT FULL CLOSURES PLANNED

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY – A project to construct a viaduct and retaining wall on Highway 1 between the San Carpoforo Creek Bridge and Ragged Point will continue the week of Sunday Oct. 13.

Motorists will encounter one-way reversing traffic control for the installation of K-rail and a 24/7 traffic signal beginning Monday, Oct. 14 with roadwork taking place Monday through Thursday from 6 am until 6 pm and on Fridays from 6 am until 2 pm

Electronic message boards will be posted to alert the public. This signal will allow traffic to proceed in each direction 24/7 until project completion.

No full overnight closures of Highway 1 are anticipated next week.

This $4.1 million project is Souza Engineering of San Luis Obispo, CA.  It’s scheduled to be complete by Spring of 2020.

HIGHWAY 1 OVERNIGHT CLOSURES NEAR RAGGED POINT RESUME THIS SUNDAY

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY – The full overnight closures of Highway 1 near Ragged Point will resume on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 9 pm and will resume each overnight through Friday morningOct. 11 from 9 pm until 5 am.
