AMGEN BICYCLE RACE TO MOVE THROUGH MONTEREY, SAN LUIS OBISPO AND SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES NEXT WEEK

 CENTRAL COAST – Stages Four and Five of The Amgen Tour of California Bicycle Race will move through Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties next week using portions of the state highway system in the following locations during the daytime hours.

  • On Wednesday, May 15, the cyclists will leave Laguna Seca at 10 am and will use portions of State Routes 68 and 218 before traveling south on Highway 1 from Monterey before reaching Morro Bay in San Luis Obispo County at 3:45 pm.
  • On Thursday, May 16, the cyclists leave Pismo Beach at 10 am using Highway 1 before using portions of State Routes 154 and 192 in Santa Barbara County.  The cyclists will end their day at 3:45 pm in Ventura County.

The CHP will oversee traffic control during these moving closures.  Electronic message signs will be activated to inform the public about the cyclists and support vehicles.  The public may learn more about this event at:   http://www.amgentourofcalifornia.com/

Upcoming Road Work, Highway One, 4/15/19

MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for Monterey County from Sunday, April 14 through Saturday, April 20newest information is in red. Please keep in mind that construction work is weather-dependent.

Highway 1: Anderson Canyon Bridge – Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Big Sur: Apr. 15 – Apr.19
One-way traffic controls will be in place on Highway 1 between the Anderson Canyon Bridge and Pfeiffer Burns State Park for emergency road work from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Highway 1: Hurricane Point – San Luis Obispo County Line, Big Sur: April 15 – April 19
One-way traffic controls will be in place on Highway 1 between Hurricane Point and the San Luis Obispo County Line for asphalt paving work from 7 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Highway 1: Castro Canyon Bridge, Big Sur: April 16
One-way traffic controls will be in place on Highway 1 at Castro Canyon Bridge for bridge inspection work from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Highway 1: Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge, Big Sur: April 16
One-way traffic controls will be in place on Highway 1 at the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge for bridge inspection work from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Highway 1: Big Sur State Park Entrance – Fernwood, Big Sur: Apr. 17 – Apr. 19
One-way traffic controls will be in place on Highway 1 between the Big Sur State Park Entrance to Fernwood for paving work from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Highway 1: Rocky Creek Bridge, Big Sur: April 15 – April 19
One-way traffic controls will be in place on Highway 1 near the Rocky Creek Bridge for road repairs and work on the bridge from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday thru Thursday. Work hours on Friday will be 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Highway 1: Mill Creek Bridge, Big Sur: April 15 – April 17
One-way traffic controls will be in place on Highway 1 at the Mill Creek Bridge due to repair work on the bridge from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

 

Highway 1 Climbing Lane Project: Carmel Valley Road – Rio Road: April 8 – April 12
The construction work on the Climbing Lane project on Highway 1 between Carmel Valley Road and Rio Road will occur off the highway along the shoulder of the road. As a result, traffic is not expected to be impacted and no traffic controls will be in place.

Here is the schedule for work hours for the week of April 15, 2019:

Project Site: Highway 1 at Carmel Valley Road

  • This is phase one of the project.
  • Daytime work hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • One of the southbound left turn pocket lanes onto Carmel Valley Road will be closed to traffic during construction.

Actually, this is a good thing, because for as long as the construction is going on, that spot in the highway will not have it usual craziness! No anticipated completion date given.

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT ON STATE ROUTE 1 AT JULIA PFEIFFER BURNS STATE PARK IN BIG SUR STARTING TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10

 BIG SUR – A construction project to repair slopes, restore the roadway and provide traffic control on State Route 1 at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park will begin tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10, Caltrans officials announced today.

Roadwork consists of daytime work, consisting of one-way reversing traffic control, Mondays through Fridays from 6 am to 7 pm.

 NOTE: Motorists can expect delays of up to 20 minutes.

The contractor for this $600,000 construction project is Robert J. Franks Construction of Redding, CA and should complete by this fall.

 Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT ON STATE ROUTE 1 BETWEEN HURRICANE POINT AND ROCKY CREEK BRIDGE IN BIG SUR STARTING MONDAY, MARCH 18

BIG SUR – A construction project to widen shoulders on the existing roadway and upgrade the guardrail had been postponed due to inclement weather but is scheduled to begin Monday, March 18 along State Route 1 between Hurricane Point and Rocky Creek Bridge in Big Sur, Caltrans officials announced today.

Roadwork consists of both daytime and overnight work, consisting of one-way reversing traffic control. Details are as follows:

NOTE: Motorists can expect delays not to exceed 20 minutes. Although work includes daytime and overnight work, crews are working with the school buses to ensure flow of traffic. Electronic message signs will be posted alerting the traveling public of this project.

The contractor for this $3 million construction project is Granite Construction Co. of Santa Clara, CA and should complete this summer.

Highway 1: Mud Creek – Carmel River Bridge, Big Sur: March 11 – March 14
A moving lane closure will occur on Highway 1 between Mud Creek and the Carmel River Bridge for vegetation spraying from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Highway 1: Rocky Creek Bridge, Big Sur: March 11 – March 15
One-way traffic controls will be in place on Highway 1 at the Rocky Creek Bridge for work on the bridge from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Highway 1: Vincente Creek Bridge, Big Sur: March 13 – March 15
One-way traffic controls will be in place on Highway 1 at the Vincente Creek Bridge due to work on the bridge from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Work hours on Friday will be 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Highway 1: Carmel Valley Road – Rio Road, Carmel: March 14 – March 16
One lane closure will occur on southbound Highway 1 between Carmel Valley Road and Rio Road for electrical work from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Highway 1 Climbing Lane Project Resumes: March 14 – April 14
Work to create a Climbing Lane at Highway 1 and Rio Road was completed late last summer, but some additional needs for the area were postponed in consideration of the tourist travel season.  That additional work will begin next week.

The project will include the area from the Carmel Valley Road turn lane to just south of Rio Road on Highway 1.  Traffic will be impacted during the project due to lane closures.  Crews will be on site seven days a week during this project to expedite the work.

This project will have two phases:

3/14/19 to 4/14/19:

Work crews will be replacing the signal mast arm at Highway 1 and Carmel Valley Road.   One of the southbound left turn pocket lanes onto Carmel Valley Road will be closed to traffic during construction.  Project site work hours will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.

4/1/19 to 4/14/19:

Crews will be working on drainage improvement, adding an asphalt berm and signal light shields at Highway 1 and Rio Road.  The right turn pocket and one northbound through lane will be closed during construction.  Project work hours will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. five days a week.

**UPDATE #3–TRAFFIC ADVISORY**

HWY. 1 AT MUD CREEK TO RE-OPEN BY 3:30 PM TODAY AND PAUL’S SLIDE RE-OPENED YESTERDAY; MUD CREEK MAY INCLUDE TRAFFIC CONTROL

MONTEREY COUNTY — Caltrans has received confirmation from National Weather Service (NOAA) data that the significant storms have passed in the areas of Mud Creek (PM 8.9) and Paul’s Slide (PM 21.6) on State Route 1 in the Big Sur area. Caltrans Geotech, Maintenance Design and Maintenance crews assessed all road areas within the closure limits again earlier today. Contractor and Caltrans crews have been busy clearing slide material, repairing and paving the roadway to make it traversable for public traffic. As a result, Highway 1 at Mud Creek will re-open today, Friday, March 8 by 3:30 pm; Hwy. 1 at Paul’s Slide re-opened yesterday. (See photos attached). Motorists may encounter traffic control at Mud Creek over the weekend.

NOTE: Our maintenance crews will monitor this location over the weekend and notify us if the movement accelerates or site conditions change. In which case, an update will be provided.
