The National Weather Services has issued a Flood Warning for the Big Sur River for 12/31/2022 from 5:18 PM to 11:15 PM. The Big Sur River near Big Sur is approaching moderate flood stage at around 10 feet. The river is forecast to crest shortly and slowly subside to below flood stage overnight. Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Streams continue to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall. Low-water crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable. Expect many areas of slow moving or standing water. If you feel your life is in danger, get to high ground or leave the area. If you cannot do so safely, call 9-1-1. More information: https://inws.ncep.noaa.gov/a/a.php?i=78042400

UPDATE #1
HIGHWAY 1 ON THE BIG SUR COAST REMAINS CLOSED
GATES AT PAUL’S SLIDE TO CLOSE TODAY AT 4:30 PM
MONTEREY / SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTIES – Due to rockslides at multiple locations, a full closure of Highway 1 is in effect from Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County to 2.5 miles south of Big Sur in Monterey County. There is no estimated time for reopening.
UPDATE: Due to continued slide activity behind the catchment area at Paul’s Slide at Post Mile 22, the gates at the north and south side of Paul’s slide will be closed today at 4:30 pm.
The action to close the gates at Paul’s Slide is being taken out of an abundance of caution.
As announced earlier, contracted crews are expected to arrive Sunday Jan. 1, at Paul’s Slide to begin to clear debris from behind the catchment area where rocks and dirt have reached the top of the concrete barriers at four locations.
Caltrans maintenance crews who have been performing daytime storm patrol within the closure parameters will cease these patrols after dark and resume them at first light.
Updates on this closure will be provided as new information becomes available.

Highway One Closure, 12/31/22
These are the South Coast rain totals as of 1 pm this afternoon. Pay attention to Mining Ridge and Anderson Peak. Mining Ridge is behind Big Creek Reserve and Anderson Peak is just north of Esalen and above JPBurns

And just for grins, we have this to deal with.

7 am: This was South of Esalen. Also Ryne noted many disabled cars on the side of the road.
