Big Sur River undermining Highway One again?

Remember the massive log jam that Cal Trans and State Parks worked together on to remove? Interesting development at that location, and another photo sent to CABS and me. CABS is contacting Caltrans to make sure they are aware of what is going on. I am posting here for everyone else to see. For a quick refresher, start with Adam Slawter’s video taken in Jan of 2023 https://bigsurkate.blog/2023/01/02/massive-log-jam-on-big-sur-river-at-st-francis/. Then there was Barbara Ray’s report and photos. https://bigsurkate.blog/2023/11/05/photo-sunday-11-5-23-log-jam-photos-and-report-by-barbara-ray/

Today we have this. Barbara sent the first two photos for comparison, and the last one was taken on Monday, 1/22/24. All were taken by Barbara, except the last one, taken by her caretaker, Bruce Jensen.

August 13, 2017  note blocks in the upper right hand side.

Log jam taken Oct 27, 2023 for comparison.

And Monday – note the loss of blocks and the roadway above.

Video sent to me by Ken Wright, who states that the concrete blocks were put in after the Marble Cone fire (1977) to protect the road.

  1. There was a lot of National Guard that showed up near the end of the Marble Cone fire so possibly the Army Corps of Engineers. It certainly has stood the test of time, close to 50 years until it was altered or tampered with. The Army Corps of engineers was responsible for constructing the temporary Bailey Bridge over Carmel River in a very short time which allowed us all to continue to work and get to and from home during that crazy winter. Hopefully they will figure something out quickly.

  2. The Army COE did awesome work on that bridge. It was a real lifeline. When they took it down, they were going to just dump all that wood, so they let me have some to build my catio!
