On this date in 2013, a Border Collie snuck past the four dogs I had and came into my house, and up to the bed I was lying in. I heard the toenails on the wood floor and thought it was one of the four that had just let outside to pee. “Oh, my,” I said to her. “Who are you, Missy?” Skinny, covered with fleas, I put her in the bathroom away from my other dogs until I could get her to the vet and get her checked out. This was her on that wonderful day that changed my life. The vet thought she was 1 or 2 back then, which puts her at 12 or 13 years old today. He thought she had probably been running around the forest on her own for a couple weeks. Smart as a whip, polite, obedient, a true Border Collie. Happy gotcha day, Missy!

  1. I love “On this Day…” Happy Gotcha Day to Missy! You both really scored that day! Stay safe.

  2. I’m so glad she chose you! What a great story. I hope you’re OK during this storm.

  3. As one dog owner of 4 rescue dogs to another (you), I applaud you taking in this beauty. I wish more people would recognize how special rescue dogs are. You rock Kate.

  5. Love your story! All of our dogs except one (a Belgian Malinois) have been “strays.” Ages ago, whilst parked at the edge of a large empty lot (job site), I was hidden on the street side of my 1968 Ford “Bronco.” As I stood up, I saw a large German Shepard mix (Malamute?) standing very erect and regal-looking, about fifty yards away, his orange eyes glowing, the Pacific far below. I stayed put, but called to him. Curious about the talking car (I presume), he made his way cautiously in a zig-zag pattern toward the object, finally appearing to the rear of the car on my side. I stood behind the door, speaking low, and he hesitated, then walked normally up to the door. “Jump in,” I said. He did, promptly sat in the passenger seat looking straight ahead. I got in and drove him home.
