Mike here. Unfortunately we were fogged in again and I could not venture to a spot where this magnificent moon is visible. Here is the moon from August 8 taken from Rio Road in Carmel. For those fortunate enough to be able to take in this rare moon event, congratulations!

ASPHALT REPAIR ON HIGHWAY 1 BETWEEN SALMON CREEK AND LUCIA BEGINS NEXT WEEK

MONTEREY COUNTY – A 21-mile asphalt repair project along both directions of Highway 1 south of Big Sur between Salmon Creek and Lucia will be starting next Monday, August 11 in the following locations:

Monday, Aug. 11 through Friday, Aug. 15:
· From Alder Creek to Gorda

Monday, Aug. 18 through Friday, Aug. 22:
· From Limekiln to Lucia

Monday, Aug. 25 through Thursday, Aug. 28:
· From Salmon Creek to Gorda
(No closure on Friday, Aug. 29 due to the holiday weekend)

Roadwork will take place from 8 am to 3 pm each day and consist of one-way reversing traffic control with flagging.

NOTE: There will be Electronic Message Boards alerting motorists. Motorists can expect a delay not to exceed 15 minutes.

This roadwork is being performed by the Caltrans Willow Springs and Cambria Maintenance crews to provide motorists and cyclists a safer roadway to travel. Work is expected to be completed by the end of August.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway construction zones.

I just don’t get it. There are really that many unconscious, unaware people in the LPNF? When stupidity puts others lives at risk, imposition of the fine is in order. I hope they all had to pay the $5000. Fine – that would pay for some patrolling costs!

Six years ago today, this blog came into existence. What did I do with my time before bigsurkate? Oh, yeah, I worked. 😉

Los Padres Reminds Fourth of July Visitors of Fireworks Ban

GOLETA, CA, July 1, 2014…Los Padres officials are reminding Fourth of July visitors that the possession or use of fireworks—including the “safe and sane” variety—is strictly prohibited in the forest at all times. Rangers and law enforcement officers patrolling the forest will be strictly enforcing the ban throughout the long weekend.

A violation of the law could result in a $5,000 fine and/or six months in jail. In addition, anyone causing a wildfire is potentially liable for all costs associated with suppressing the fire.
The Forest asks that all visitors take the following precautions to prevent wildfires:
· Contact the Ranger Station nearest your destination for the latest conditions.
· Campfires are permitted in Campfire Use Sites only and must be attended at all times.
· Persons with a valid California Campfire Permit are allowed to use portable stoves and lanterns using gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel outside of designated Campfire Use Sites. California Campfire Permits are available for free download from the Los Padres National Forest website (http://www.fs.usda.gov/lpnf). You must clear all flammable material for a distance of 10 feet in all directions from your camp stove, have a shovel and water available nearby, and ensure that a responsible person attends the stove at all times when it is in use.
· Smoking is prohibited except within an enclosed vehicle, building, or designated Campfire Use Site.
· Internal or external combustion engines require properly installed, functional spark arresters. This requirement is in effect year-round.

Make sure all campfires are “dead out” before you leave the Campfire Use Site. Avoid parking vehicles on grass, as hot engines can ignite dry vegetation. Report any suspicious activity to the nearest Forest Service Officer or Ranger Station. To report a fire or other emergency, call 911.

5:35 – here you go –
Fort Hunter Liggett — At 1500 hours on Monday, June 30, The Monterey County Fire Academy were conducting training and as a result of a shift in the wind the fire lost containment. The fire initially started in training area west of Stony Valley and has since moved, into Stony Valley. The fire is not contained as of 1630 though it is burning into a previously burnt area where it is expected to be contained. The fire has burned an estimated 1000 Acres. There have been no injuries or damages to structures. The fire did not affect the Cantonment area. Military training has not been affected and no evacuations ordered.

The Nacimiento-Fergusson Road is currently closed.

BTW, the PTB, have named this one the Loop Fire.

5:30 pm – Just got word from a local that travels Nacimiento regularly that there is another fire on FHL. She also indicated that Nacimiento is now closed. I have not confirmed this report, but will be trying to do so in the next hour.

Six years ago yesterday, lightning struck all over Northern California, and many wildfires were sparked, including the Basin Fire (originally, the Gallery fire after the point of origin). This blog began some days later to cover the ongoing fire. We lost some homes in that fire, and some people were displaced as a result. All but one or two secondary homes (caretaker or guest homes) were rebuilt. In terms of size, it has not been surpassed since. In terms of homes destroyed and community members displaced, the Pfeiffer Fire of last December takes the lead.

This year, our drought level has lead to an unprecedented level of concern state-wide over the wildfire potential. Let this day raise the awareness of ALL community members and visitors to our area of fire awareness. Remember, no campfires allowed outside developed campground areas. May we surprise ourselves and get through this season without scorching.
