Hi Everyone,
Yesterday’s (Wednesday’s) Big Sur releases (the final two of four for 2014) went incredibly well. Both 650 and 652 stuck around the release site after being released and mingled/fed with the other condors in the flock. We had a Golden Eagle show up at the release site after they were out, which was a bit concerning, but fortunately the Golden just came in, fed, then bailed. That Golden is probably feeding chicks right now, so didn’t stick around to harass our newbees.

Anyway, one of our twitter followers recorded our condor cam video stream of 650’s release and posted it to youtube. Pretty spectacular clip, he flew right at the camera…check it out! (bsk note: I tried to get the link on YouTube, but couldn’t’)

Yesterday, April 30, the MoCo Planning Commission, in a 7-0 vote recommended a two-year moratorium on the controversial Fracking development proposed for underground gas removal from the Monterey Shale.

Commissioner Keith Vandevere seconded the motion made by Commissioner Martha Diehl to recommend the ordinance and moratorium. He said holding off on permits for fracking and other methods will allow time to fully explore the details and ramifications of a permanent ordinance and for further development of state regulations governing oil and gas mining methods under recently approved state legislation.

Currently, no permits are required so this regulation had to be fast tracked to prevent further, unregulated development.

Five thieves seized a Kindle Fire, Bowie knife and cash Saturday from a Big Sur campsite, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon their return from hiking at 7 p.m., four campers were accosted by the five suspects — three men and two women. Although a gun was never brandished, one of the five claimed to be armed with a pellet pistol, the victims told deputies.

No one was injured in the incident. The stolen property was estimated at $360 in value.

Warrants have been forwarded to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office for Joseph Whitebear, 45; Rachel Ried, unknown age; Jose Vasquez, 43; Jason Barnes, 44; and Dawn Barnes, 43.

The investigation is ongoing.

I believe this is the one at Salmon Creek a few days ago. The suspects were driving a white, newer model pick-up truck, and police have the license number.

The Monterey County Planning Department will present its “interim fracking ordinance” to the Monterey County Planning Commission on Wednesday, April 30th.

The ordinance serves to regulate but not stop fracking. Regulations mean that fracking will continue to expand. Regulations do not go far enough to protect our people, our water, our economy, and our climate. To protect us and our livelihoods, fracking must stop altogether.

A full show of support is needed on April 30th to request a 45-day period for public review before this “Well Stimulation Treatment Ordinance”, (Planning File Number REF130051), is recommended for adoption by the Board of Supervisors.

Speak out for a moratorium on fracking until the risks are fully analyzed to understand the impacts on agriculture, tourism, the environment, and the health and safety of workers and our communities.
