3:00 pm  – The fire in SLO Co started yesterday and is called Alamo Fire. It is 250 acres, but with 1/4 mile spotting and a dangerous rate of spread and looks to be blowing up at this hour. 7 hours ago, it was basically a done deal, they thought. Now it is anything but. It is off of EB SR 166 near Alamo Creek. It is currently burning in both SLO Co. and SB Co.

  1. CAL FIRE SLO reported the fire had grown from 250 acres to 500 acres in about an hour Friday afternoon. Updated at 3:30.

  2. I think it has blown past that, now. Winds kicked it up and out of the containment lines. Not good with this heat.

  3. Here’s the KSBW report from their site on the Santa Cruz fire(s): SANTA CRUZ, Calif. —
A wildfire ignited in Santa Cruz near DeLaveaga Golf Course and Santa Cruz County’s 911 dispatch emergency command center at 2 p.m. Friday.

CalFire Deputy Chief Jake Hess told KSBW that the blaze was about 2 acres wide at its peak and burned in an area with a lot of fuel to feed the fire.

Witnesses said the fire spread “rapidly.” A large smoke plume was visible from as far away as Aptos.

The closest home to the blaze was 500 yards away, but the fire burnt up and away from local neighborhoods. Firemen halted the blaze before it threatened homes.

CalFire helicopters and an air tanker made retardant and water drops to prevent the blaze from spreading into a nearby neighborhood.

A second small wildfire ignited nearby, but firefighters were able to quickly douse it, and refocus on the De Laveaga fire.

Firefighters halted the DeLaveaga blaze from spreading by 3:30 p.m., containing it 1/2 acre by 6 p.m. No injuries were reported.

An upwards of 80 firemen are still present at the scene, and fire crews will monitor the blaze for another 4 to 8 hours.

North Branciforte Avenue and Upper Park Road were closed to traffic for more than an hour.

Investigators have not yet determined what sparked the wildfire.
